Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred Unveils New Official Cinematic Opening Sequence Ahead of its April 28 Release

Diablo IV Lord of Hatred announced at the Game Awards 2025

Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred is the second expansion pack and the last major update for the three-part Hatred story arc of the game, and it is set to release in less than a week. Fans of Diablo are excited to finally face the Lord of Hatred himself, Mephisto, and Blizzard Entertainment thought it’d be fitting to unveil the official cinematic opening for the Lord of Hatred expansion. Here’s a full breakdown of the opening sequence, and why it’s such an important scene in Diablo IV.

Watching the opening cinematic scene of the Lord of Hatred expansion for Diablo IV was wild. There were so many unexpected things that happened, and this opening scene definitely builds on what we can expect to happen in this story expansion. I was rocked by all the hauntingly stunning visuals and the evil that is Mephisto.

The opening cinematic sequence opens to screaming and a haunting scene of hundreds of skeleton-like damned souls floating in a huge body of water, and a huge monster-like creature, who is revealed to be Mephisto, rising from the water. Neyrelle, a central character in Diablo IV, witnesses this, and the scene is revealed to be some sort of dream-like vision of Mephisto. Apparently, after the events of Vessel of Hatred, Neyrelle established a connection with Mephisto and can see visions of him periodically.

Much of the opening cinematic sequence is banter between Neyrelle and Mephisto, threatening to defeat each other and so on and so on. What shocked the hell out of me was when Mephisto straight-up murdered Neyrelle. It was such a quick and fleeting moment, I almost didn’t believe it, especially because Neyrelle was such an important character in the main storyline and the role she played in the last arc. However, yes, it is true, we lost Neyrelle to the Lord of Hatred, but not before she could share the knowledge she had on how to defeat Mephisto once and for all.

Lord of Hatred Drops April 28

The Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred expansion is set to release next week on April 28. There’s so much to unpack with this expansion, as it’s going to be the last one for the three-part Hatred arc for Diablo IV. This will be the 13th season in Diablo IV and will be a complete and final expansion to the main storyline of the game, which will focus on the final battle against Mephisto. The update will also include major updates to gameplay, the introduction of two new character classes, and many in-game rewards that can be unlocked by pre-ordering Lord of Hatred.

Last week, it was revealed in a new in-game scene video released by IGN that Lilith would be making a return in this expansion. How she would be making her return and in what capacity hasn’t been revealed; however, we can expect her to play a pivotal role in the main story, given that she was the main antagonist in the first chapter of the Hatred arc, and that she is the daughter of Mephisto.

I’m not entirely sure if Blizzard Entertainment will feed us more breadcrumbs on this highly anticipated expansion for Diablo IV; however, with the release of the expansion so close, I don’t think it’ll be necessary. There’s been so much hype, not just for the release of the Lord of Hatred expansion, but for this final battle we’ll get to experience with Mephisto, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for players once the expansion is released.
