“Deadpool” Hype Surges as Ryan Reynolds Teases an Exciting New Project
If you were hoping that the massive, record-breaking success of the latest mutant team-up would immediately greenlight a solo “Deadpool 4,” you might want to sit down. Ryan Reynolds recently dropped some teases about the Merc with a Mouth’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it sounds like the days of Wade Wilson carrying an entire movie on his spandex-clad shoulders are officially over.
Ryan Reynolds Explains The Future of “Deadpool”

Don’t panic just yet. Speaking in a recent interview on “Sunday Today,” Reynolds gave fans a glimpse into his creative process for the character moving forward. When asked about the highly anticipated return of Deadpool, the actor admitted that while he definitely has some things written, he has no intention of making Wade Wilson the main event ever again.
In a statement obtained by Variety while speaking on “Sunday Today,” Reynolds said, “I have some stuff kind of written, but I don’t think I am ever going to center him again.” According to the man who basically willed this franchise into existence, Deadpool’s life as the sole driving force of a movie has run its course. Instead, Reynolds sees him stepping into a different kind of spotlight. He added, “He is a supporting character. He is a guy who is great in a group.”

Why Reynolds Is Taking a Different Approach With “Deadpool 4”
Honestly, it makes perfect sense. Hollywood loves to beat a dead horse, but Reynolds seems acutely aware of superhero fatigue. Putting Wade in a supporting role could be the perfect palate cleanser. To understand why Reynolds is pulling the brakes on a fourth solo outing, you have to look back at his previous comments. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter late last year, he laid out exactly why centering the character a fourth time just wouldn’t work creatively.
As Reynolds explained, the formula for a great solo movie with this character requires stripping everything away from him and backing him into a corner. We’ve seen him lose his looks, his girl, and his universe. Doing that all over again for a fourth time? Per The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds admits it would feel “a little iterative and redundant.”
Will We See Deadpool in the Avengers or X-Men?
Scaling back his screen time doesn’t mean sacrificing the comedy or the character development. Reynolds assured fans that there is still a powerful, fulfilling arc left for Wade Wilson—it just won’t be as the marquee name on the poster. Although not officially confirmed nor denied, Reynolds has been rumored to be one of the unannounced cast members in this holiday’s “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Reynolds firmly believes that Wade needs to remain an outsider. According to the actor, the character’s deepest desire is to be accepted, but actually giving him that acceptance would ruin him. Deadpool works brilliantly when he is bouncing off the rigid morality of characters like Captain America or the brooding intensity of Wolverine. He is the ultimate disruptive force with a mouth.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” recently proved this by raking in a staggering $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie in cinematic history (dwarfing the very respectable $780 million earned by each of the first two films). Wade Wilson will be absolutely coming back to the MCU at some point in the future. When he does, he’ll be crashing someone else’s party—and frankly, that’s exactly where he belongs.
