Everything We Know as ‘The Legend of Zelda’ Film Excites Fans with Latest Update from CinemaCon 2026
“The Legend of Zelda” fans were treated to a welcome surprise at CinemaCon 2026 when Sony Pictures announced that the live-action adaptation of the legendary series had wrapped filming.
Following the massive success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and its sequel, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” “The Legend of Zelda” showcases that Nintendo and Sony are dedicated to continuing their collaboration and carving out a stronger presence in the film industry with their titles.
Sadly, no new images or teasers were revealed alongside the news, but the update still generated positive buzz within the community as fans eagerly wait to see one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises translate to the big screen and into live action.
Anticipation for the movie is expected to grow, with all eyes on whether it can capture the magic that proves video game adaptations have a place in Hollywood for the long term.
What We Know About “The Legend of Zelda” Film

In November 2023, Nintendo revealed to expectant fans that it was collaborating with Sony Pictures to develop the live-action movie. As before with “The Super Mario Bros Movie” and its sequel, the latter would handle most of the production, and the former would focus on video content.
Planned for release on May 27th, 2027, the highly anticipated film is directed by Wes Ball, known for directing the “Maze Runner” films, and starring lead actors Bo Bragson (Zelda) and Evan Ainsworth (Link). These casting announcements, along with other details from the movie, were revealed by series creator Shigeru Miyamoto.
When discussing his vision for the film, Ball had thoughts of his own to share during an interview with Total Film.
“I have this awesome idea,” he said. “I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time, of how cool a Zelda movie would be… I want to fulfill people’s greatest desires. I know it’s important, this [Zelda] franchise, to people, and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape.”
One important way to help him and the rest of the team bring the film to life will be the iconic location where it was filmed. As filming for the movie concluded, reports surfaced indicating that it was shot at the same New Zealand locations as Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
While Nintendo has been fairly tight-lipped about the film so far, they did release a few photos on social media, giving us our first look at the actors in their respective roles. Furthermore, rumors have been floating around that “Severance’s” Dichen Lachman has been cast to play the role of Impa.
What will “The Legend of Zelda” Film Be About?

While not much has been revealed about the movie’s overall plot, a general synopsis has been released.
“’The Legend of Zelda’ follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness,” reads the summary. “The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce—an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.”
Between the synopsis and how Nintendo handled the plot of the first Super Mario Bros. movie, it is safe to say that “The Legend of Zelda” will not stray from the roots of the series. Through the history of the games, there have been various stories and timelines, but they have all been woven from the same pattern. Link will continue to be a brave young man going on a journey to save the land of Hyrule, while Ganon, the major antagonist, has dark plans to take over the land of Hyrule, using the sacred power of the Triforce.
With filming now complete, fans won’t have to wait too long to see how the magic of Hyrule will come to life on the big screen.
