Avengers: New Writers Join Russos — What That Means for the 2026 and 2027 Holiday Releases
“Avengers: Doomsday” is coming to theaters this year on Dec. 18, 2026 and its sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” will hit the big screens next holiday on Dec. 17, 2027. With the success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers will be joining the Russo brothers in working on both Avengers movies.
Avengers Movies Add “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” Writers
“Challengers” writer Justin Kuritzkes came on board to write and rewrite during the production of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Kuritzkes was credited with additional literary material. Sommers and McKenna, who co-wrote the Holland-led “Spider-Man” films, also contributed to “Ant-Man and the Wasp.” They have now taken on assignments for Marvel’s upcoming “Avengers” movies. Before their work on Marvel, McKenna and Sommers were writers on the sitcom “Community.”
Sommers publicly confirmed that he and McKenna are working on the new Avengers films. Neither Sommers nor McKenna provided any more details. Sommers said on The Wrap, “We’re happy to say we are involved with the ‘Avengers.’ We can’t really say much more than that. We love working with Marvel, and we have a relationship with the Russos, and it’s a pleasure. It’s a real pleasure.” With their work on Marvel Studios, both writers are crucial partners in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Avengers: Doomsday” Brings Familiar Faces Back
The first of the two films, “Avengers: Doomsday,” reunites directors Joe and Anthony Russo with an all-star cast that includes Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Anthony Mackie (Captain America/Sam Wilson), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), the Fantastic Four (Pedro Pascal/Mr. Fantastic, Joseph Quinn/Human Torch, Vanessa Kirby/Invisible Woman, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach/The Thing), several X-Men (James Marsden/Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn/Mystique, Patrick Stewart/Professor X, Ian McKellan/Magneto, Channing Tatum/Gambit, Kelsey Grammar/Beast) and the Thunderbolts/New Avengers (Wyatt Russell/U.S. Agent, Florence Pugh/Yelena Belova, David Harbour/Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen/Ghost, Lewis Pullman/Sentry), along with many more, including cast members that have not been announced yet.
The heroes will face off against the MCU’s new big bad, Dr. Doom, who will be played by Robert Downey Jr. Michael Waldron is working on the screenplay for both “Avengers” films, and he is known for his work on “Loki” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” He was initially revealed as a writer on the movies. The filmmakers are still working on “Doomsday,” and the Russo brothers revealed at Comic-Con that “Secret Wars” will begin filming soon.
However, they did not give a specific timetable for when the follow-up “Avengers” sequel starts filming. Chris Evans recently teased his character’s storyline for “Doomsday.” He spoke at a recent Q&A at Fan Expo Boston over the weekend. Evans’s statement was posted on the @FANEXPOBoston X account. Evans said at the Fan Expo, “The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers. Their favorite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him. To them, that’s what makes a hero, and that’s someone who gets punched so many times but still gets up. So they keep finding new ways to kick his butt. And this one was brutal.”
The addition of McKenna and Sommers signals Marvel’s commitment to character-driven storylines in the midst of the demands of interconnected superhero storytelling. Their past experience working on Marvel projects makes them a natural fit for large-scale Marvel films like the upcoming “Avengers” projects. The Russos’ involvement, the presence of veteran writers such as McFeely and Waldron, and the expanding cast list all point to an ambitious, interconnected pair of films that the studio is positioning as major holiday events in 2026 and 2027.
