Netflix has locked in a premiere date for “Tantara.” The period K-drama starring Song Hye-kyo and Gong Yoo arrives Friday, Dec. 11, exclusively on the streamer, Netflix announced Oct. 22.
What Netflix Announced
The series pairs Song and Gong with Kim Seol-hyun and Cha Seung-won. Noh Hee-gyoung, the writer behind “Our Blues” and “It’s Okay, That’s Love,” wrote the series, and Lee Yoon-jung, who directed “The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince,” is behind the camera, according to Netflix.
The date reveal came with a new poster that arranges the characters around a turntable, a nod to the music-driven story.
What It Means for Fans
Fans of Song and Gong finally have a date to circle. “Tantara” is set in Korea’s cutthroat entertainment industry from the 1960s through the 1980s and follows people who start with almost nothing but stake everything on making it big, according to Netflix.
Song plays Min-ja, who breaks into the music business after a childhood of poverty in which she worked any job she could find. Gong plays Dong-gu, her childhood friend, who fights to protect her dream. Kim plays Min-hui, the bold singer who becomes their first artist, and Cha plays Seok Gil-yeo, the era’s top hitmaker. Netflix’s poster traces Min-ja and Dong-gu’s climb from nightclub staff to rookie talent managers.
What’s Next
“Tantara” premieres Friday, Dec. 11, on Netflix. Netflix hasn’t said yet whether all episodes will drop at once.
