Cloud Imperium Games released a new trailer for Squadron 42, the single-player spinoff of Star Citizen, and confirmed the game is now available to wishlist on Steam. The Squadron 42 release date remains Q2 2027, according to Polygon, giving fans their clearest look yet at the long-in-development title along with a full roster of confirmed cast members.

What The Trailer Shows

The new footage mixes cinematic cutscenes with gameplay snippets, according to Polygon. It depicts ground-based first-person shooting and space combat set against a narrative-driven story.

IGN reported the trailer also includes first-person platforming and puzzle sections, ship customization, off-duty activities between missions, a hacking mini-game and moments where players make narrative choices. The story places players in the year 2945 as recruits enlisting in the UEE Navy at a moment when the United Empire of Earth faces collapse under pressure from outlaws and hostile alien forces.

Polygon noted the trailer’s tone leans jingoistic, drawing comparisons to Starship Troopers without that film’s satire, though the outlet cautioned this framing could be intentional misdirection by Cloud Imperium Games.

Confirmed Cast And Playable Characters

Polygon confirmed a cast list that includes Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham, Andy Serkis, Henry Cavill, Ben Mendelsohn and John Rhys-Davies. Polygon reported that many more familiar faces appear in the trailer beyond the named cast.

IGN reported the two playable protagonists: Ian Duncan voices and performs as the male player character, while Alix Wilton Regan plays the female player character.

Squadron 42 Release Date And Steam Wishlist

Squadron 42 becoming wishlistable on Steam marks a new step for a game that has spent years in development. The listing itself does not change the release timing. Cloud Imperium Games still lists Q2 2027 as the target window, the same date the studio set after delaying the game in August, according to IGN.

That delay followed an earlier plan to launch sooner. IGN published comments from Star Citizen creator Chris Roberts explaining the shift: “At CitizenCon 2024, we announced we would ship in 2026. Our plan was to release in Q4 around IAE. But much like the rest of the industry there is no way I want to launch my spiritual successor to Wing Commander, a game that has had 12 years of blood, sweat and tears invested into it (we started Squadron 42 development in 2014 as 2013 was opening studios, hiring people and getting the Hangar module out for Star Citizen) launching into the attention buzz saw of GTA 6.”

No specific release day has been announced beyond the Q2 2027 window. Fans should treat any more precise date as unconfirmed until Cloud Imperium Games states one directly.

Why The Reveal Matters

Squadron 42 is positioned as a spiritual successor to the Wing Commander series, built as a standalone single-player campaign inside the broader Star Citizen universe. The project has drawn attention for years partly because of its star-studded cast and its lengthy development timeline, which Roberts himself traced back to 2014.

A Steam wishlist page gives the game new visibility ahead of its eventual launch and lets interested players track updates directly through the platform. Star Citizen itself remains without a release window, according to IGN.

What’s Next

Cloud Imperium Games has not announced a more specific date within the Q2 2027 window. Fans wanting updates can follow the new Steam wishlist page, which will likely be the venue for any future scheduling news tied to the campaign’s release.
