It’s Wednesday and time for your daily devotional. In Romans 7, Paul explains how the law of sin affected God’s law. Together, they created a battle, but in chapter 8, the Spirit of life in Christ frees you from the struggle. In today’s daily devotional, thank God there’s no conflict with sin when you live by the Spirit of life in Christ.
Joined to Jesus
As someone who grew up under Jewish law, Paul was quite familiar with how it worked. The law dominated one’s life, and the only way to be free of it was through death. He uses the example of a wife, who’s legally bound to her husband as long as he’s alive. If she marries another man, she’d be an adulteress, but if her husband dies, she’s free to marry again. Likewise, believers were once bound to the law but are now dead to it and joined to Jesus. In your daily devotional, your freedom lies in Christ alone.
Superiority Over the Law
When Paul was under the law, sin tempted him to do things God’s law forbade. Paul asserts that the law isn’t sinful, for it identifies sin, eliminating guesswork or human error that may judge something bad as good. But the enemy used the law to entice man by awakening every evil desire to do what God said not to.
Verse 11 says, “For sin, taking occasion by the commandment deceived me, and by it slew me.” Paul calls the law “spiritual,” and himself “carnal,” for even though the law was “holy, and just, and good,” it had no power to subdue the flesh. In this daily devotional, the Spirit’s superiority over the law is undeniable.
The Law Had No Power
Verse 15 reveals that even while obeying the law, Paul’s flesh rebelled: “For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.” Paul knew the law was perfect, but his flesh was weak. He struggled to obey and conceded that the battle to do right meant sin dwelt within him. In verse 21, Paul says the law in his members, or flesh, warred against the law of his mind, bringing him into captivity.
His mind wanted to obey, but the law in his flesh was the contrary law of sin. Finally, he cried out, “Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” In your daily devotional, Jesus is the only One who can deliver you from a life of contradictions; the best the law could do was remind you of God’s commands, but it had no power over your flesh.
Newness of Life
Paul explodes with confidence in chapter 8: “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” The law was weak through the flesh, but God destroyed sin through Christ, and you’re now righteous as you walk in the Spirit. Those in the flesh can’t please God, but in Christ, your flesh is dead, and you walk in newness of life in Him. In this daily devotional, you’re not a debtor to the flesh; you’re led by God’s Spirit; you’re a Son of God.
You Have Victory Over Your Flesh
In Wednesday’s daily devotional, you’re an heir of God and a joint-heir with Christ. As you’ve suffered for Him, you’ll one day reign with Him. In today’s daily devotional, you have victory over your flesh through Christ. No more struggling; you now live in the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.
