Happy Friday! It’s time for your daily devotional. Psalm 49 is yet another psalm by the Sons of Korah. It’s full of instruction about knowing where your true wealth and provision lie. It’s easy to get caught up in worldly things or to think you’re somehow in control. In today’s daily devotional, realize that you’re in God’s hands, and trusting Him to lead you throughout life is true success.
Remain Steadfast in God
The psalmist begins by requesting attentiveness; he wants the people, from small to great, to listen to his words of wisdom. Since wisdom comes from God, it’s from the Source of Life. His speech is accompanied by a harp that adds a rich, warm sound. In verse 5, he rejects fear, even in uncertainty. The enemy uses fear to rob God’s people, but God says, “Fear not.”
As a believer, fear shouldn’t immobilize you or make you surrender to anyone. Psalm 118.8 declares, “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.” In your daily devotional, remain steadfast in the Lord, and cast all your cares on Him.
God is Sovereign
In verse 6, the psalmist has a word for those trusting in their wealth. Boasting of wealth isn’t wise because money can’t redeem their life or the lives of others. Money is useless when it comes to one’s soul or spirituality. Death is the great equalizer, and no amount of money can pay it off. It has no respect for persons, regardless of their economic status, heritage, or prominence.
Verse 11 says they inwardly think “their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.” However, none of this matters when their time expires. In today’s daily devotional, understanding life is knowing that God is Sovereign, and your life is in His hands.
Always Alive in Christ
Verse 13 calls it folly to think earthly titles make one exempt. The psalmist teaches that those without God are without hope. However, in verse 15, he expresses confidence in God: “But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me.”
Christ is the Resurrection and the Life, and those who are His will continue to live in Him. He died for your sins, but He rose victorious as the firstfruits of many more to follow. In this daily devotional, know that you’re an eternal being who will always be alive in Christ Jesus.
Seek Eternal Wealth
The psalmist admonishes his listeners not to be impressed when someone gets rich. When people amass great fortunes, they may buy houses, lands, cars, and other things that exemplify wealth. But they can’t take any of it with them. They’ll leave it for others to fight over, mismanage, or sell. Their glory or status won’t follow them either; they’ll go to a place where it’s useless.
In Luke 16: 19-31, there was a rich man who died and was tormented in hell’s flames, yet a beggar died and was comforted in Abraham’s bosom. In your daily devotional, decide if you’ll seek temporal wealth in this life or God’s eternal riches.
Look to God for Joy and Fulfillment
In Friday’s daily devotional, the psalmist urges you to understand God’s truths by giving Him your life and trusting His plan. When someone thinks they’ve got the key to life, they’re prideful. God is the One who upholds you. In today’s daily devotional, look to God for joy and fulfillment. Only He can give you true wealth.
