Happy Monday! It’s time for your daily devotional. Book II of Psalms begins with Psalm 42, a prayer from the Sons of Korah. It speaks of thirst that represents our desire for God, for we need HIm for survival. In today’s daily devotional, you should desire God’s presence, for only he can satisfy your heart’s longing.
God Fills Your Soul
In verse 1, the psalmist uses a deer parched with thirst in search of water to describe his soul longing for God’s presence. God has loved you with an everlasting love and drawn you to Himself. There’s a space inside you that only your Creator can fill. Without Him, you’d be constantly longing for fulfillment. You’ll search other areas, but nothing satisfies you like the Lord. In your daily devotional, God fills your soul; everything else leaves you empty.
God’s Steadfast Love
The psalmist begins verse 2 with “My soul thirsts for God,” and ponders, “when shall I come and appear before God?” It’s not known exactly when this psalm was written, but it may have been composed during Judah’s captivity. Being away from the City of God and His Holy temple would bring a sense of loss and regret. Undoubtedly, he regrets the sins that led to his nation’s downfall.
He feels the loss of no longer walking into the house of worship and praise where God’s glory dwelt. He desires God’s favor once again. Although they endured warfare and captivity, God’s steadfast love never left them. In this daily devotional, when you sow to the flesh, you reap a harvest, but that doesn’t mean God withdraws His love from you.
He’ll Opes His Arms Wide
The psalmist laments the tears he cries night and day in verse 3. These are tears of repentance, not only for his personal sins but for his nation’s. Israel had lapsed into idolatry and wickedness. God gave them space to repent, as prophets warned of destruction if they didn’t change. However, they forsook the warnings and continued in sin. Thinking about their shortcomings grieved him deeply.
As he dealt with these disturbing thoughts, people asked, “Where is thy God?” It’s one thing to feel separated from God, but another to be taunted because of it. In your daily devotional, it may seem God isn’t with you, but He’s there waiting on your repentance. If you turn, His arms are open wide to redeem your life from destruction.
Singing the Majesty of God’s Name
In verse 4, the psalmist sheds more tears. In Psalm 56:8, David cries, “Put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?” David trusted through tears, declaring that his enemies would turn back because God was for Him. And with longing, the psalmist remembers the times he went to the House of the Lord along with crowds to worship the King.
In the Lord’s house was joy and praise. He remembers celebrating the Lord’s holy days at the temple while singing the majesty of His name. In this daily devotional, remember the great things about being in God’s presence and hold them dear.
God’s Presence Never Leaves You
In Monday’s daily devotional, the psalmist expresses faith in verse 5, saying to his soul, “Hope thou in God.” Like David, he knows God is for him, and he’ll continue to praise His name. In today’s daily devotional, know that God’s presence never leaves you; He is always near. His countenance shines brightly upon you, so that even in the darkest trials, He’s everything your soul desires.
