It’s Thursday and time for your daily devotional. Psalm 48 is another one attributed to the Sons of Korah. It extols the Lord’s greatness and fame. Your God is famous on earth, for His works are known from ages past. When you celebrate God, you honor the One who is unmatched in power. In today’s daily devotional, this psalm leads you into praise of your great God.
God’s Name is Placed There
The psalmist begins verse 1 with a thunderous exaltation: “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.” There’s a song entitled “Nobody’s Greater than You” that swept the charts when it was first released. It talks about searching everywhere and not finding anybody greater than God.
Jerusalem is called the City of God; it’s built on a mountain range, and at its center was God’s opulent temple. People from all nations came to Jerusalem to worship the King. It’s God’s habitation, for He has placed His Name there. In your daily devotional, praise God for making His habitation among His people in the city called by His name.
God is a Proven Defense
The City of God is beautiful, and God is “known in her palaces for a refuge.” The psalmist speaks of safety within her walls. In verses 4-7, kings of the earth converged upon Jerusalem, but they retreated in fear, unable to conquer God’s citadel. God rules nature, and at His command, an east wind broke the ships of Tarshish when they dared to attack God’s place of refuge. In this daily devotional, God has been a defense for His people in the past; praise Him for being your mighty Defender today.
God’s Name Evokes Praise
The psalmist exudes joy in verse 8, confident that “God will establish it for ever.” He basks in the greatness of the Holy City, feels God’s presence there, and knows its foundation is a Rock. God’s heavenly hosts stand guard around Jerusalem. No city on earth is like it because God established it. God’s temple is a monument to His loving kindness. His name alone evokes praise and honor.
The Psalms proclaim God’s excellence and encourage you to bless His name. You’re to praise His name from the rising of the sun until its setting. In your daily devotional, the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir is known for these powerful lyrics: “Hallelujah, Salvation and Glory, Honor and Power unto the Lord our God.” It’s an anthem of praise for the greatness of His name.
Tell Others of His Works
The Sons of Korah invite worshippers to look around Jerusalem and observe her landscape, fortresses, and palaces. Its magnificence is to be talked about and celebrated with future generations. When something is close to your heart, you talk about it. In Psalm 34:1, David says that God’s praise will continually be in his mouth. In this daily devotional, praise God for His glorious works and don’t stop telling others of His great power.
Your God is With You Forever
In Thursday’s daily devotional, Psalm 48 closes with verse 14: “For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.” God is a faithful God who doesn’t visit you occasionally, but He’s with you for eternity. Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “For the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” In today’s daily devotional, exalt Him, for your God is greatly to be praised.
