The Sheriff Country season 2 premiere answers why Boone chose to put his own feelings aside for Mickey, and showrunner Matt Lopez has clarified how much Ben McKenzie fans will see this season as Jim Wade returns for multiple episodes.

The season 2 opener picks up several hours after the season 1 finale’s revelation that Eva is Mickey’s birth mother, according to TVLine. In that episode, Mickey tells Boone, “I messed up. You told me how you felt, and I made the wrong choice,” referring to her earlier rejection of him.

Boone’s Choice And Its Consequences

Boone responds by choosing to support Mickey rather than pursue his own feelings for her, a decision Lopez described as both noble and costly. “He makes a noble and selfless choice in that moment, one that might be in denial of his own feelings and happiness,” Lopez told TVLine. “He realizes Mickey is taking it from all sides.

Her mom has come back, which is a bombshell, and she still has this huge betrayal to deal with with her father. There’s also an unprecedented threat to Edgewater. So Boone becomes the figure who’s like, ‘I need to be there for Mickey.’ It’s heroic and selfless, but we’ll see that there’s a cost, a psychological cost, an emotional, and a physical cost, to Boone.”

Lopez said an upcoming episode will bring Mickey and Boone to an emotionally tense, explosive confrontation that he called the best work actors Matt Lauria and Morena Baccarin have done on the series. No episode number or air date for that moment has been specified.

What It Means For Fans Of Mickey And Boone

For viewers invested in the Mickey and Boone dynamic, the premiere makes clear that Boone’s restraint is not the end of the story. Lopez’s comments signal that the emotional toll on Boone will play out over the season, even as he keeps showing up for Mickey through her mother’s return, the betrayal involving her father and the threat facing Edgewater.

Those three crises are stacking on top of each other for Mickey right as she is processing the biggest relationship decision of her personal life, which is part of why Lopez frames Boone’s choice as costly rather than simply heroic.

Ben McKenzie’s Role As Jim Wade

Season 2 also brings back Ben McKenzie as Jim Wade, sheriff of neighboring Drake County and a longtime friend of Mickey’s from their shared history at the police academy. McKenzie is married to Baccarin in real life, and the two previously worked together on Fox’s Gotham.

Lopez confirmed McKenzie will appear in multiple episodes this season, with Jim Wade serving as a sounding board for Mickey given his seniority in the job. “Jim has been sheriff of Drake County for much longer than Mickey has been sheriff of Edgewater,” Lopez told TVLine. “So he becomes sort of a resource for her. When she’s dealing with something and needs to talk to someone who has dealt with it before, she can go to Jim.”

That dynamic carries some friction from the start. After Mickey’s bender, Jim tells her, “they’re not even close to being even now,” a line that points to tension built into their history even as he steps in to help her.

What’s Next

Lopez’s comments to TVLine confirm McKenzie’s Jim Wade will factor into multiple episodes this season, though specifics on which episodes or when the promised Mickey and Boone confrontation will air have not been detailed.
