PS5 QSSR: 2 games launch an exciting, bold upgrade

PS5 QSSR is bringing AI-assisted upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5. Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution on Oct. 1, naming “Marvel’s Wolverine” and “Ghost of Yōtei” as the first two supported games.

Sony’s announcement says patches add QSSR as another graphics option in both games. Support is being added through those games, so players should not expect every PS5 title to change automatically.

What PS5 QSSR changes

The technology comes from Project Amethyst, Sony’s AI graphics partnership with AMD. Sony says a smaller neural network and an implementation tuned for PS5 allow it to improve image detail and stability on the existing console.

Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions describe clearer environmental details in their games. These are developer claims; the announcement does not establish a universal resolution or frame-rate target for every PS5 QSSR game.

How PSSR fits into the picture

Sony continues to position PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, as its higher-tier option on PS5 Pro. QSSR is a lighter approach designed for the standard system.

In its Feb. 27 PSSR update, Sony described a revised network and algorithm, with “Resident Evil Requiem” as the first game using that version. PSSR analyzes game images as it reconstructs a more detailed output. The shared aim is improved image quality, but the two console implementations should not be assumed to produce identical results.

Which games come next?

Sony plans to make PS5 QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers. Its announcement does not provide a wider rollout calendar. Check each game’s patch notes and graphics settings for support.
