GTA 6 ESRB rating revealed: 7 explicit warnings earn an M
Seven content descriptors and one interactive element now sit beside “Grand Theft Auto VI” on its store listings, confirming the GTA 6 ESRB rating as M for Mature 17+. Rockstar Games posted the ratings ahead of the game’s Nov. 19 launch, IGN reported Thursday, Oct. 1.
The descriptors are blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content and use of drugs and alcohol. In Europe, the PEGI board gave the game its equivalent top rating, PEGI 18.
Nudity and sexual content are on the label
Few players expected a gentler GTA 6 ESRB rating from the series. What the label does not yet say is how that content shows up in play. The ESRB usually follows its rating with a longer summary that points to specific scenes and mechanics, and IGN noted that this detailed breakdown has not been posted yet.
That fuller GTA 6 ESRB rating summary could settle a running fan debate over whether protagonists Jason and Lucia appear in an on-screen sex scene. For now, the rating neither confirms nor rules it out. Strip clubs are the only sexual content known so far, according to IGN.
An M rating means the ESRB considers the content generally suitable for players 17 and older. It is one step below Adults Only, a label that most major console makers and retailers will not carry.
What the GTA 6 ESRB rating says about in-game purchases
The rating also flags in-game purchases. That stands out because Rockstar said over the summer that there are “no monetizations in this game.” IGN’s read is that the flag most likely covers the paid jump from the standard edition to the Ultimate Edition, which adds cosmetics, stores and missions.
Rockstar has not detailed an online mode for GTA 6. It is not expected at launch and is rumored for 2027. If it follows GTA Online, where players can buy currency for cars, clothes and property, microtransactions are likely to return there.
From ‘Hot Coffee’ to Leonida
Rockstar has tangled with the ESRB before. “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” shipped with a hidden, interactive sex minigame in its files that modders unlocked, and the board re-rated the game Adults Only. That pulled it from major retail shelves and prompted a short recall, according to IGN. “GTA IV” and “GTA V” later let players hire sex workers in their cars.
The GTA 6 ESRB rating lands in the final weeks of the marketing push. IGN noted that Rockstar has put up signage in Miami, mailed swag boxes to influencers and announced a $400 collector’s set, which drew criticism because it does not include a copy of the game.
Pre-orders opened June 25 in two versions, the standard game and an Ultimate Edition with premium vehicles, weapons and apparel, according to the PlayStation Blog. Pre-order customers also get a free month of GTA+ and a Vintage Vice City Pack.
GTA 6 is set in the fictional state of Leonida, home to Vice City, and launches Nov. 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, per the PlayStation Blog. The road to launch has been bumpy, from a reported delay of nearly 18 months to Rockstar’s response to a wave of leaks.
