Questions have already been asked about the recent Captain America 4 trailer, such as: who does Giancarlo Esposito portray? (S.H.I.E.L.D. agent G.W. Bridge, of course), or why did Thaddeus Ross end up shaving off his mustache? No, an even bigger question remains: Who is the mysterious character in the trailer saying the words “Global power is shifting? You’re just a pawn.”
New Meaning to the Trailer
Maybe this is why the Captain America 4 trailer is subtitled “Brave New World.” As many theorists are getting braver with guessing who this mysterious character may be. However, if one connects the dots, it is likely fairly clear. Yet this is Marvel Studios we’re talking about. Red herrings flood the seas here. To start off… Watch the recently dropped teaser trailer yourself.
The truth is, the Captain America 4 trailer spawns sentimentalism for a true political thriller of epic proportions that hearkens back to the days of the Winter Soldier (and also the Civil War to a certain degree). We have no mystery about the Red Hulk being present, as the last few teased seconds show him in full force. We also can’t wait to see Ford in all his CGI glory. But really, do we really know for sure who that guy with the big hat is?
Shades of Winter Soldier Brainwashing
We see Isaiah Bradley go rogue in this Captain America 4 teaser trailer. That should tell us a little bit about the guy with the big hat. He just might be behind Bradley going rogue. This begs the question: just how much of a ‘villain’ is Ross going to be as the Red Hulk?
That’s not much of a problem anyway, for a time, because Red Hulk actually became a hero, even serving under the brand of the Avengers. Sure, he had his scuffles with Banner at length. But at the end of the day, this is Ross we’re talking about; he does have a daughter, he has good intentions, and he’s most definitely not the Abomination.
Clearly, Ross isn’t a part of the villainy (at least for now). So who could it be? It’s highly doubtful it’s Zemo (he’s not even going to be in the Thunderbolts film). So is the guy with the big hat who we’re thinking it is—the leader? Samuel Sterns?
MCU Trailers and Their Easter Eggs
The Captain America 4 trailer has ‘Easter eggs’. But that’s part of the mystery. The thing here is that sometimes we’re not entirely certain of what we’re looking at, so it may just be that the guy with the big hat is not Samuel Sterns at all. However, research, scouring many videos of the actor, showed him portraying this mysterious baddie.
For example, Tim Blake Nelson is featured in many interviews, and it’s clear that his one line in the Captain America 4 trailer isn’t 100% convincing, but it’s pretty close. Although if one were to look closer and, well, perhaps get the YouTube captions on, the trailer would verify the guy speaking is, in fact, Samuel Sterns!
Yet we also already know Samuel Sterns, the iconic “Leader” of the Hulk universe, will be in the Captain America 4 film, but to what extent? We don’t know for sure. But, boy, what a connection this film makes from way back to “The Incredible Hulk” of 2008! For the first time since Endgame, we’re getting Marvel Studios to connect some dots here.
The “Dots” of the Captain America 4 Trailer
And those are some big dots in that Captain America 4 trailer. Yet, is it really true? Is that man with the bulging head in the screenshot, Samuel Sterns from The Incredible Hulk, really the mastermind behind all of this?
It’s a fair question to ask as we have the so-called “Power Broker” Sharon Carter to also wonder about and even de Fontaine to consider—both vixens of equal villainous propriety, as we saw in the post-credits of both Black Widow and Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Only time will tell. And we’ll have to wait with bated breath on how Captain America: Brave New World plays out in theaters. We’re still wondering if there will be a surprise cameo from Bruce Banner.
