Toho

Toho movies, the Japanese studio behind Godzilla and a century of Japanese cinema.

Total Apex Take

Toho just won Godzilla an Oscar, and it's still the most creatively confident kaiju studio on the planet because of how little it seems to care about matching Hollywood's version of the character.

"Godzilla Minus One" took the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects on what was reportedly a fraction of a typical blockbuster budget, a genuine statement moment for a studio that's been making Godzilla movies since 1954 and has outlasted every attempt by other companies to own the character. Toho continues to run its own Godzilla universe in parallel with Legendary's MonsterVerse crossovers, letting both versions coexist rather than consolidating into one global continuity.

We think that dual-track strategy is smarter than it looks: Toho gets the global blockbuster money from the Legendary co-productions while keeping total creative control over its lower-budget, higher-craft domestic films, which is how a nearly 75-year-old franchise keeps producing its best-reviewed entry in decades instead of its most bloated. The question now is whether Toho chases a "Minus One" sequel quickly to capitalize on the Oscar momentum, or sticks to its patient, one-good-film-at-a-time release rhythm.

About Toho

Toho is a major Japanese entertainment company founded in 1932, best known internationally as the studio behind Godzilla, which debuted in 1954 and became one of the longest-running film franchises in history. Beyond Godzilla and its many kaiju co-stars, Toho has produced a vast catalog of Japanese films across numerous genres and operates one of Japan's largest theater chains.

Toho's Godzilla franchise has had a significant influence on global monster-movie filmmaking, and the studio has continued producing new Japanese-language Godzilla films even as Legendary Entertainment's separate MonsterVerse series runs in parallel in the United States.
