Paramount+

Paramount+ movies, originals and live sports.

Total Apex Take

Paramount+ is now a streaming service owned by a company that just spent a year fighting over whether to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, and its own identity is the thing most likely to change next.

The Skydance-Paramount merger closed in 2025, putting David Ellison in charge of a company whose streaming arm had already merged Paramount+ with Showtime and leaned hard into password-sharing crackdowns to narrow losses. Paramount+'s real value has always been less about prestige originals and more about live sports and reliable IP — CBS's NFL package and exclusive streaming windows for playoff games, plus Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone-adjacent universe and Star Trek, carry the platform more than any single flagship drama.

Our take is that Paramount+ is now a bargaining chip as much as a product: new ownership has spent considerable energy on acquisition talks involving Warner Bros. Discovery, and a service this size either becomes the core of a much bigger streaming consolidation play or gets rebranded and folded into something else entirely within the next couple of years. Betting on its name staying the same through 2027 feels like the riskier assumption right now.

Watch what Ellison's team does with the Showtime integration and sports rights specifically — NFL and other live sports are the one asset here that's genuinely hard to replace, and whoever ends up running Paramount's streaming business will build around that first.

About Paramount+

Paramount+ launched on March 4, 2021, as a rebrand of CBS All Access, Paramount's earlier streaming service that had run since 2014. The relaunch broadened the platform beyond CBS content to include the wider Paramount Pictures film library, Nickelodeon, MTV, and other ViacomCBS-owned brands, alongside live NFL and other sports coverage carried on CBS.
