Law & Order

Law & Order universe shows, NBC's long-running procedural crime franchise.

Total Apex Take

Dick Wolf's franchise has outlived every TV trend by refusing to evolve much at all, and NBC keeps rewarding that stubbornness with renewals.

"Law & Order: SVU" with Mariska Hargitay is now one of the longest-running live-action scripted shows in American television history, and the flagship "Law & Order" and "Organized Crime" (bringing back Christopher Meloni's Stabler) keep the Wolf universe running as a reliable NBC block rather than a legacy curiosity. The format — ripped-from-the-headlines cases, minimal character arcs, procedural comfort food — hasn't meaningfully changed since the Clinton administration, and that's the point.

Our take is that the franchise's resistance to serialization is a feature, not a limitation: it's built for syndication, rerun binging, and casual viewers dropping in anywhere, which is exactly the kind of durable, low-maintenance IP streaming-era franchises struggle to replicate. The open question is succession — Wolf's production company has weathered cast and showrunner turnover for decades, but the franchise's next real test is whether NBC still wants procedurals as the streaming math around linear television keeps getting worse.

About Law & Order

Law & Order is a long-running NBC procedural franchise created by Dick Wolf, built around a two-part structure following police investigation and subsequent criminal prosecution of New York City crimes. The original series debuted in 1990 and became one of the longest-running scripted dramas in American television history, spawning multiple successful spin-offs.

The most enduring spin-off, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, has become one of the longest-running primetime dramas ever produced, while the franchise overall has expanded into other cities and formats over the decades.
