DreamWorks

DreamWorks Animation and DreamWorks Pictures movies, from Shrek to How to Train Your Dragon.

Total Apex Take

The reliable mid-budget alternative to Pixar and Disney — less prestige, consistently solid box office.

DreamWorks Animation has carved out a specific niche under Universal: broader, more straightforwardly funny family films that don't chase the emotional ambition Pixar is known for, and that's been a sustainable business even when individual entries get mixed reviews. Shrek 5's development, after years of the franchise being dormant outside spin-offs, is a bet on nostalgia for a brand that still has enormous built-in recognition.

The live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” remake is a more interesting experiment — betting that one of the studio's most critically acclaimed animated trilogies can translate to live action the way Disney's library has, with mixed industry precedent for that kind of conversion.

Our take: DreamWorks' real strength is knowing exactly what its brand is and not overreaching — it rarely wins the “best animated film” conversation, but it's been one of the more consistent box-office performers in family animation precisely because expectations are calibrated correctly.

About DreamWorks

DreamWorks traces back to DreamWorks SKG, the studio founded in 1994 by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen. The company later split into two separate entities: DreamWorks Animation, now owned by Universal/NBCUniversal and best known for franchises like Shrek, Madagascar, and How to Train Your Dragon; and DreamWorks Pictures, a live-action label now part of Amazon MGM Studios.

DreamWorks Animation in particular reshaped mainstream animated filmmaking in the 2000s with a comedic, pop-culture-aware sensibility that stood in deliberate contrast to Disney and Pixar's house styles at the time.
