Some in the crowd remark that this is a bad omen. We then cut to the mangled body of King Aegon. He is burned beyond recognition and clearly incapacitated. It is suggested by Aemond that someone must rule in his stead. Ser Criston Cole tells Alicent that they won, at the cost of 900 men and the possible loss of a king.
Aegon survived his wounds, but has a long road to recovery ahead. Alicent wants to be the Regent, but Aemond is selected. Rhaenyra is troubled by her small council, as Ser Alfred lashes out at Rhaenyra; viewers wonder whether he realizes she is the queen and can end his life quickly. Rhaenyra is frustrated by these men, and it’s not just Ser Alfred. Do you think it ironic that both the Greens and the Blacks have problems with their small council?
“House Of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 5” Summary
The fallout from Rhaenys’ death and the incapacitation of Aegon at Rook’s Rest continues to be a major issue. The grief plays out in both Dragonstone and Driftmark in this episode of “House of the Dragon.” Daemon confronts the Brakens. There are several conversations between Rhaenyra and others. She is complaining about the Small Council not listening to her.
Daemon’s mental state remains poor; he sees plenty of visions. In this one, he has intercourse with his mother, Alyssa, who tells him he is her favorite son. At dinner, he is told he should pay those who will work on Harrenhal, which is in a state of disrepair. His tormented state is a defining characteristic of “House of the Dragon.”
Jace rides his dragon to secure the alliance of the Freys. He shows maturity in securing the alliance. The Freys demand Harrenhal in exchange for their loyalty. Jace says they have his protection, and that of his uncle. They must now bend the knee to seal the alliance. After he secures the alliance, he flies back to see his mother, who tells him she is proud of him for what he has done, even though he did not tell her, in the final scene of the episode. It seems he matures in this episode of “House of the Dragon.”
Daemon is taunted by Alys some more as he is chopping wood, his hand bloody from hard work. He hears screams when she comes; this is a signal to viewers that she is coming. She tends his bloody hands, trying to fix them. She questions him. Ser Simon shows up with big news. The Blackwoods have overwhelmed the Brackens in an ancient “House of the Dragon” feud. The Blackwoods took Stone Henge. Yet, there remains trouble with this alliance. The Riverlords show up in the middle of the night to complain about the Blackwoods.
Aemond Is The Regent

First, Alicent gets the word on the King’s condition. The Grand Maester says that though the king was wearing Valyrian steel, he might never wake. Alicent tells the small council that a regent is needed, and she volunteers, having served as regent before. The council wants Aemond, but she argues he is too young and inexperienced. Aemond is chosen.
Aemond presides over the small council meeting. Alicent, who wanted the job, is shaken by their choice. Aemond declares the decaying ratcatchers should be cut down from the City. The City grows restless, which is blockaded and short of food. This is a major problem for the Greens, who are now contending with their fading chances in “House of the Dragon.”
Final Analysis: Corlys Thinks Rhaenyra Asks Much
Near the end of the episode of “House of the Dragon,” we see Lord Corlys mourning the death of Rhaenys, with his granddaughter Baela. The episode began with him tearfully ascending the throne. That was the scene before the severed head of the dragon was paraded through the streets. She tells him that Rhaenyra wants him to be the Hand. That would be a promotion for him, but he must get past his ill feelings. He says her demands are unending, and that obviously the death of his wife was not enough.
