The Gears of War E-Day exclusive status means a lot to the people making the game, The Coalition’s developers say. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said at Xbox Games Showcase 2026 that the prequel would come only to Xbox Series X/S and PC. Early access began Oct. 1 for Premium Edition players, and the full launch is Oct. 6.
Gears of War E-Day exclusive: What the developers said
Creative director Matt Searcy said the team feels honored to carry the franchise forward. “It’s part of Xbox’s DNA. It’s woven into it,” Searcy said in an interview with creator Destin Lergarie, IGN reported.
He said the team’s priority was craft, not platform. Like most game developers, Searcy said, the studio is “gamers first and foremost” and wanted to make the best Gears game it could, with technical and art showpiece ambitions.
Searcy called seeing Sharma announce the game’s Xbox return on stage “a really cool moment.” He added that the team is proud to be one of Xbox’s main titles, a role he said Gears has held for a long time. Art director Aryan Hanbeck also took part in the interview.
Why the Gears of War E-Day exclusive matters for Xbox
The Gears of War E-Day exclusive announcement carried weight because the series had started to move beyond Xbox. The remaster Gears of War: Reloaded arrived on PlayStation 5 in August 2025. Leaked listings and rumors suggested E-Day might follow, until Sharma ruled it out at the showcase.
After leaked splash art fueled talk of a canceled PS5 port, Xbox said it had not made any last-minute decision about the game’s platforms.
What to know before launch
Gears of War: E-Day, from The Coalition and People Can Fly, is set 14 years before the original game. It follows young Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago during Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde first invaded. IGN’s early review, which covered only the campaign, scored it 9 out of 10.
