Jagex used RuneFest 2026 to announce RuneScape Reignited, a permanent new character type launching December 2, 2026. The Birmingham crowd of over 6,000 got the news during the opening keynote. So what exactly makes this different from every Fresh Start World the studio has trotted out before?
A Fresh Start Without the Fleece
Reignited characters begin at Level 3 and exist alongside what Jagex now calls Veteran characters. Both types share the same worlds, can chat, and can join clans or homesteads together. Trading between the two groups is blocked outright. Each side gets its own Grand Exchange, and boss instances stay separated by character type. Reignited players also gain access to Reignited-only worlds, while Veterans cannot enter those spaces.
The selling point here is a completely unsullied economy. Materials that Veterans swim in will be genuinely scarce for Reignited players, at least at first. Jagex frames this as an opportunity for the sort of player who enjoys sourcing and supplying rare goods before anyone else figures out where they spawn. No Treasure Hunter, no Hero Pass, no paid progression of any kind. The studio says that part is permanent.
New players get the Remastered Journey, a rebuilt early game starting in Lumbridge with modernized UI, quests, and environments. The Adventure Guide acts as a curated path through content that has accumulated for 25 years. Jagex describes it as a way to avoid having a wiki open in a second browser tab at all times. Parts II and III arrive sometime in 2027.
Statues for the Tryhards
The Hall of Legends gives world-first achievements a permanent home. Combat, skilling, quests, exploration, and some categories Jagex only described as silly all qualify. Anyone who lands a world-first gets a statue of their character displayed in the hall. A new HiScore system launches alongside it. For the first 10 days after launch, December 2 through December 12, every Reignited character gets free access to members’ worlds. That applies regardless of whether the account has ever paid for membership.
About 30 minutes after the Reignited reveal, Jagex announced RuneScape 4. Built in Unreal Engine, set in the Sixth Age, starting in Ashenfall, still years from release. The studio insists it replaces nothing and that RuneScape 3 continues getting updates. The 2027 roadmap includes Hoard of Dragons in January, City of Gnomes, and Secrets of Karamja with a new raid. An Agility rework and new solo bosses are also planned.
Community reaction split hard. Some players saw Reignited as a cash grab dressed up as a fresh start. Others pointed out that asking people to abandon 20-year accounts while simultaneously teasing a sequel does not exactly inspire confidence in the current game’s future. One player on the forums summed it up by asking whether Jagex expected anyone to redo thousands of hours of skilling just to play a version where the Grand Exchange has no lobsters listed.
Jagex Hedges Its Bets
The Plugin API launches this month, with early access rolling out ahead of official release. That addresses a long-standing request from the community and gives the existing game a tangible win even as Reignited looms. Whether Reignited becomes a genuine second life for RuneScape or just another Leagues-style curiosity depends on how many people actually want to start over in 2026. The free trial period suggests Jagex knows the answer is not guaranteed.
Jagex Doubles Down, Players Double Over

Jagex’s decision to announce Reignited and RuneScape 4 within thirty minutes of each other was a public relations gamble that may have backfired. The timing created the impression that the company is hedging its bets on the current game’s future rather than committing fully to either project.
A fresh economy and world-first achievements sound appealing on paper, but they ask players to abandon decades of progress for a promise that Jagex could revise at any time. The free trial period through December 12 suggests the studio knows that convincing veterans to start over will be an uphill fight.
What sticks with me is the detail that Reignited characters and Veterans can share clans and chat together but cannot trade a single item, which means friendships will persist while the economy fragments into two separate realities. RuneScape 4 being described as “a few years away” with no details on platforms or accounts reads like a teaser designed to generate headlines rather than genuine information.
RuneScape Players Face A Familiar Lumbridge Grind
The 2027 roadmap for the existing game looks substantial, with Hoard of Dragons, City of Gnomes, and Secrets of Karamja all planned, which undermines the theory that Jagex is quietly winding down RuneScape 3. Whether Reignited becomes a genuine second life or just another Leagues-style curiosity depends entirely on how many people want to grind through Lumbridge one more time in 2026.
