Grab your smudge sticks and UV flashlights, Ghost Hunters. If you have been tired of running for your life in the exact same default outfits for the last few years, Kinetic Games has some fantastic news for you. The highly anticipated Player Character Update for Phasmophobia is officially dropping on May 5, 2026, across all platforms.

For a game that thrives on terrifying you and your friends in the dark, Phasmophobia has always had a bit of a quirky charm when it comes to its clunky character models. But that is all about to change. We are finally getting the visual glow-up we deserve, just in time to get brutally hunted by a Demon on Professional difficulty.

Welcome to the Phasmophobia Customization Shop

At the very heart of the May 5 update is the brand new Customization shop, located right in your lobby. After years of waiting, players can finally spend their hard-earned ghost hunting cash on something other than thermometers and crucifixes.

You will be able to choose from 12 base characters, but the real fun begins when you start mixing and matching. Players can swap out hairstyles, hair colors, face shapes, skin tones, outerwear, innerwear, and accessories. If you have grown attached to your original goofy-looking paranormal investigator, do not worry. The old character parts are still in the game, meaning you can keep your classic look or create a hilarious hybrid.

The absolute best part about this massive Phasmophobia update is that Kinetic Games is entirely avoiding microtransactions. Every single cosmetic item is unlocked through gameplay challenges or bought using the standard in-game currency. That means you are quite literally risking your life against aggressive poltergeists just to buy a cool new jacket or a fresh pair of underwear. It adds a hilarious, rewarding layer to the standard investigation grind.

Fresh Animations and Gameplay Tweaks

Customizing your paranormal investigator is a huge draw, but the Phasmophobia Player Character Update goes well beyond just looking good. Kinetic Games is overhauling the way you interact with the haunted environments.

First off, the infamous death room is being completely removed. Instead, players will experience brand new death animations. If your teammate gets incredibly lucky with the Tarot cards, you will also get to see completely new revival animations. Throw in a new set of animations for the EMF reader and general equipment handling, and the entire core loop of Phasmophobia is going to feel significantly more fluid and immersive.

Corey Dixon, the Art Director at Kinetic Games, noted that the team has worked incredibly hard since the 2020 launch to make the game re-playable. Giving players the freedom to personalize their hunters is a natural step. Dixon also mentioned that with these updated models, the team is starting to ramp up the scare factor even more, pushing the experience toward its massive version 1.0 release later this year.

Phasmophobia Twitch Drops and Event Rewards

If you want to start building your wardrobe immediately, Kinetic Games is handing out some freebies. From May 5 until May 11, players who link their accounts and watch participating creators can earn an exclusive High Priestess T-shirt via Twitch Drops.

Additionally, if you braved the horrors of the Cursed Hollow Easter event earlier in 2026, your rewards are finally arriving. Anyone who completed those limited-time community goals will log in to find a new necklace, a custom t-shirt, and the creepy Forest Spirit Mask waiting in their inventory.

It is a massive month for horror fans, especially because Phasmophobia is not slowing down after May 5. Kinetic Games previously announced a massive crossover event with Alan Wake 2, which kicks off on May 12 and runs until June 2.
