MSI 2026 Match Preview – Hanwha Life Esports Versus LYON: Do LYON Dare to Dream of Success?
The 2026 MSI has not been without upsets. From Team Liquid Alienware stomping Karmine Corp to T1 losing to G2 Esports, who subsequently lost to LYON, this MSI has had it all. LYON will need to achieve one more upset in their upcoming series against Hanwha Life Esports. Only Bilibili Gaming has taken a game off of HLE at MSI, but can LYON learn from that series?
Two Similar Opponents

HLE and LYON have had two opponents in common. They have both played against Bilibili Gaming and G2 Esports. They shared a 3-0 victory over G2, but their results against Bilibili Gaming were slightly different. HLE took a game off the LPL first seed, while LYON lost 3-0.
Featured Matchup
Kanavi Versus Inspired
One of the reasons BLG won against HLE was XUN keeping Kanavi quiet in the early game. The pathing choices made it difficult for Kanavi to impact the map. Inspired had similar early game pathing to eliminate SkewMond from the map. Inspired will need to repeat that against Kanavi. In the only game Kanavi got to play, he took control of the map. On the other hand, Kanavi cannot afford to let Inspired play the game he wants to. SkewMond could not throw him off his flow, and G2 struggled as a result.
Competing For Four World Championship Spots
For the past two MSIs, the two best-performing teams earned their regions additional slots at the World Championship. On both occasions, the LPL and LCK earned those spots. Gen.G Esports, as the victors, earned automatic qualification. For the first time, there is a chance that the LCK will not have four teams at the World Championship. They will need HLE to beat LYON to keep the streak going. HLE is the favorite in the series, but this MSI has shown that anything is possible. If LYON topples HLE in the series, they will have four World Championship spots for the LCS. That will mean half of the region will feature at the tournament, hosted in North America.
Will Momentum Play a Role?
Momentum can always impact the result of a series. After losing to BLG the way that they did, there is a chance they lose confidence in themselves. However, they did show during the LCK Regular Season that they can recover from setbacks. With two World champions, two MSI champions, and a First Stand champion, there is a lot of experience on the roster.
They should all be comfortable with recovering from a heavy defeat. LYON must use the momentum they gained from crushing G2 Esports. It will not be an easy task to beat the LCK first seed. Before their series against BLG, many wondered if HLE would even lose a game at the tournament. That narrative has shifted, and there is some hope for LYON.
Prediction

Hanwha Life Esports 3-1 LYON
Despite a weak start to MSI, LYON has leveled up. Every performance has been an improvement over the previous ones. Even when they were not at their best, they pushed BLG. Only a handful of fights went in BLG’s favor, which allowed them to win the series. LYON has shown that they can contend with the aggressive playstyle. They will deal with that in this series. If HLE returns to form, LYON might not have a chance in the series. The solo laners will once again need to step up to challenge Zeus and Zeka. Only Bin and Knight have stopped them in recent series.
The Final Spot On the Line
The loser of the series will see their MSI journey come to an end. The winner will face Bilibili Gaming in the Grand Final. They will also guarantee four World Championship spots for their region at the tournament later this year.
