‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Director Reveals What MCU Movie Is Really About

Spider-Man swings high above New York City, suspended on webbing between skyscrapers in "Spider-Man: Brand New Day." The sun beams dramatically, capturing a sense of action and adventure.

Destin Daniel Cretton, the director behind “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” has finally opened up on the upcoming summer blockbuster, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” After months of rumors and speculations, Cretton has offered some insight into what Tom Holland’s fourth Spider-standalone film is truly about — and his explanation paints a big picture for what to expect in the upcoming movie.

Director Reveals Core of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”

Amidst the official trailer of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” being released, Holland spoke about his excitement for the movie. In a post on Instagram, he says, “I have to say I’m so proud of the movie. I sound biased, but I think it’s my favourite one.”

In a move that was exclusively shared with Entertainment Weekly, Sony released the first three script pages of the movie. Now, this is not your typical blurry Reddit leak. This is a pristine, highly orchestrated marketing drop. What makes it highly entertaining is that the pages are absolutely covered in handwritten notes. We get little scribbles and annotations from Tom Holland, Zendaya and Destin Daniel Cretton himself.

It is a wonderfully fun gimmick. Obviously, the cynical part of us knows that these three did not sit around a single coffee table, passing the same physical script back and forth with a red pen just to share it with the internet. It is a purely manufactured promotional stunt. But honestly? It works. It is charming, and it successfully gets the fanbase buzzing without actually spoiling anything of substance.

What The Heavily Annotated Pages Reveal

After the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the world’s memories of Peter Parker were erased to prevent a multiversal disaster. No one remembers who Peter Parker is, including his best friends Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds and Zendaya’s MJ Watson. Where does the web-crawler go from here? Fans are familiar with the opening logo from any MCU entry: footage from moments across the films playing within the Marvel Studios logo.

According to a script annotation from Cretton, shared with Entertainment Weekly, the footage on the logo will be “the memories that Peter no longer shares with Ned and MJ and Aunt May, who William Dafoe’s Green Goblin killed in ‘No Way Home.'” Peter is still heavily struggling with the massive, life-altering decision he made at the end of the last movie.

And how is he coping with the isolation? By lurking on social media, of course! The script details that Peter is actively following Ned and MJ online as they move on with their lives and head off to college without him. If you were looking for a hefty dose of human emotion, there you go. Watching your best friend and the love of your life go to college while they have absolutely zero memory of your existence is a tough pill to swallow.

New Tech, New Suit, and Body Issues

Beyond the heartbreak, Peter is apparently dealing with a few physical issues. The script reveals that he is starting to feel like something is wrong with his own body. We do not get the specific details of what that means just yet, but it adds a nice layer of tension right out of the gate. To help him manage his chaotic new solo life, Peter is leaning on some upgraded tech.

The pages mention a 3D printer that he uses to manufacture his superhero gear, which feels incredibly on-brand for a broke kid operating out of a cramped apartment. He also has a brand new AI assistant named EV. Remember EDITH? Well, EV is the new voice in his ear. Speaking of gear, the script confirms that his new suit is specifically inspired by the other cinematic Peters he met during his last multiversal adventure. It is a great nod to the past that literally drives his character forward, culminating in the script’s final beat where he pulls down his mask and flies away.

Beyond the “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” Script: Rumors and Reshoots

While these pages give us a nice taste of the opening scene, there is a lot more swirling around “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Holland recently teased that there are some new tweaks happening during reshoots, which is completely standard for a Marvel production. We also previously got a look at some footage introduced by Holland in hologram form, which basically aligns with everything shown in this script drop.

Meanwhile, the merchandising machine is already dropping hints. We have Lego sets waiting in the wings that might reveal some third-act secrets, and Marvel Legends action figures that are actively teasing a massive Spidey-Hulk brawl. Plus the relentless rumors about Sadie Sink potentially showing up as Jean Grey, which has not been confirmed or denied by the studio, this movie has all angles covered.

July 31 is right around the corner, and it looks like Peter Parker is in for a very rough, highly entertaining ride. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” will be the first Marvel Studios theatrical film released in 2026. It will be followed by an “Avengers: Endgame” re-release on Sep. 25 and the highly anticipated “Avengers: Doomsday” on Dec. 18.
