Why Mahershala Ali Finally Walked Away From Marvel’s "Blade" Reboot

Mahershala Ali was confirmed to star in a “Blade” reboot in the MCU during a surprise appearance at Comic-Con in 2019. However, the movie never got off the ground. Although directors Bassam Tariq and later Yann Demange were given the duties to helm the film, the movie still didn’t get made. Although he made a voice cameo, Ali never appeared as the character in live-action.

Ali, who won Academy Awards for “Moonlight” and “Green Book,” was in intense preparation for the role. He and director Bassam Tariq had worked together on the character. Ali had trained for more than a year and was eager to perform stunts, but the “Blade” movie fell apart as its creative team changed. Ali’s comments to GQ seemed to suggest that Marvel hold up their end.

In an interview with GQ, Ali said, “I’ve been doing this professionally for pushing 30 years now, and one thing I’ve learned is that what is for you is for you and what is not is not. For whatever reason, that project is not for me. If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on. Again, you had me under contract; they have billions of dollars. If they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. So we’re not doing the movie. But I feel ready to move on from the ‘Blade’ questions. Those questions are for them. They didn’t want to do it, so they should answer that question.”

Mahershala Ali: Troubles With “Blade” Reboot

Marvel first announced Ali as its new Blade at San Diego Comic‑Con in 2019. The project went through two directors: Tariq was attached and later left in 2022, amid a shifting production schedule, just two months before filming was to begin. After Tariq’s departure, Yann Demange was brought on and later exited the production in June 2024.

Those departures left the film stalled, and Ali’s comments to GQ framed the situation as a choice by Marvel rather than by him. The news comes on the heels of “Wonder Man” being scrapped despite Disney previously announcing that the show was going to have a second season. The series was reported canceled on Thursday, July 30, and the report came from Variety. At that time, Disney hadn’t confirmed the cancellation.

Ali and Tariq have reunited on a different project, “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,” an action film from Amazon MGM Studios. The premise follows a devoutly religious hitman, played by Ali, who, after the death of his wife, embarks on a desperate journey across Houston to protect his children while confronting both external threats and his own shaken beliefs. The skills that Ali had developed from training to play Blade, including stunt work and sword practice, were put to use on the new film, which he described as a form of creative redemption.

Marvel’s Setbacks And The Wider Context

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has publicly expressed regret on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that the reboot did not fall through. On host Josh Horowitz’s Instagram page, Feige said on the podcast, “I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala.” Feige made the statement to Horowitz on the podcast in mid-July. Ali’s version of Blade made a voice cameo in a post‑credits scene for 2021’s “Eternals,” and Wesley Snipes, who starred in the original Blade films, returned in an extended cameo in 2024’s “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

With “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” set to debut at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) Ali is shifting focus to a role that allows him to use the physical and dramatic preparation he had done for “Blade.” It opens in select theaters Sept. 25, and it will be followed by expansion starting Oct. 9 through Amazon MGM’s Orion Pictures.

The film’s festival premiere will be the next public moment for Ali to showcase that work. The new move will offer audiences a chance to see the actor in a demanding action role that, in part, grew out of the aborted Blade production. For now, Mahershala Ali has signaled he is done answering questions about Blade and is moving forward with new projects and the work he has completed for the film that will premiere in Toronto. The 51st Toronto International Film Festival is set for Sept. 10 to Sept. 20 this fall.
