Newest “Dune: Part Three” Trailer Excites With A Dark Twist On The Typical Hero Narrative.
The trailer for “Dune: Part Three”, the conclusion of director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the “Dune” saga, recently dropped, and viewers can see that things have changed massively since the last time they saw Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) in action.
Similar to countless other plots in which the main character faces off against an evil empire or kingdom, fans should recall that Paul Atreides’s latest acts were avenging his family’s death by killing the Emperor, taking his daughter as his bride, and declaring himself the new ruler. Most stories would end there, allowing for the hero to right the wrongs of his evil predecessor to make things better.
Yet, “Dune” is not most stories, and the latest trailer confirms that.
While only two years have passed for viewers since “Dune: Part Two,” Villeneuve confirmed that the final chapter of his story takes place 17 years after the events of the previous film. That time jump sees Paul coming to terms with the destructive consequences of his rise to power.
What Do We Learn From The Latest Trailer
In his bid to consolidate his power and reign as emperor, Paul’s religious crusade against the other Houses of the Imperium has spiraled into a messy conflict affecting countless worlds. This reveal indicates the darker shift the film seeks to tackle, with Paul having to embrace his role as a tyrant rather than the messianic figure the previous film had propped him up to be.
Furthermore, the trailer for “Dune: Part Three” shows that some of the people who were once Paul’s greatest allies are beginning to question him most. Zendaya returns to her role as Chani, Paul’s love interest from the last film, whose relationship with him has been damaged not only by his taking Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) as his wife in a political marriage, but also by his breaking his promise not to take on the very role he has.
Jason Momoa also makes a thrilling return as Duncan Idaho, who many fans will no doubt recall died in the first film, creating a mystery around his return that book fans will appreciate. The reunion, though, seems far from happy, as Duncan and Chani are disgusted by the path Paul has taken and who he has become.
His former allies aren’t the only A-list actors revealed to have a gripe with Atreides in “Dune: Part Three”. The trailer also introduces Scytale (Robert Pattinson), who seems to be plotting a way to overthrow Paul. Anya Taylor-Joy also reprises her role as Alia Atreides, but she seems much more involved in the film than in her brief cameo in “Dune: Part 2”.
What Makes “Dune” So Special

Based on Frank Herbert’s classic series, which was first published in 1965, “Dune” follows Paul Atreides as the sudden death of his noble house due to the machinations of the imperial family thrusts him down a path of survival and revenge that leads him to a direct confrontation with not only the throne but the galaxy as a whole.
Dune has been one of the most critically acclaimed science fiction stories since its initial release. Most of the praise it has garnered comes from the way Herbert revolutionized science fiction by shifting the focus away from technology beyond human comprehension toward complex, evolutionary human development and a vast weave of political maneuvering, ecological crisis, and profound philosophical themes within an expansive universe that feels truly alive for most of its readers.
Only time will tell if the final part of the trilogy captures the hearts of fans in the same way the book series did.
Either way, fans are excited to see ‘Dune: Part Three’ end the trilogy on a high note, with its arrival in theaters on December 18, 2026.
