‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’: J.K. Simmons Says He Won’t Reprise Role as J. Jonah Jameson
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is set to hit theaters in three weeks. J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson has become one of those rare, indelible casting choices: loud, abrasive, and impossible to imagine anyone else playing him. Simmons first exploded onto the scene as the Daily Bugle editor in Sam Raimi’s 2002 “Spider-Man,” and his return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a surprise cameo in “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and again in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” When rumors swirled that he’d appear in the next film, fans hoped for more of that familiar, snarling energy. However, it looks like Simmons has put those hopes to rest.

Promoting his new series “The Westies,” which arrives on MGM+ on July 12, Simmons told ComicBook plainly: “Not in it, dude. I don’t know who on the internet decided that that was fact, but I ain’t in it.” That single line ended the chatter, at least for now, about his involvement in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” It wasn’t surprising that there were rumors about Simmons potentially returning to the role.
Considering the scope of the story, a small role for the character seemed very realistic. Simmon’s presence in the MCU has already been established, and the idea of him continuing to needle Spider-Man fits the character’s DNA. Even so, the reality of filmmaking is messier than fan wish lists. There are a few straightforward reasons why Simmons isn’t part of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” and none of them require conspiracy. Also, much speculation rests on Sadie Sink’s undisclosed role. Some scoopers have claimed that she is playing Jean Grey of the X-Men.
However, that hasn’t been confirmed or denied. Sink recently opened up about working with Tom Holland on the film. In speaking with Nylon, she said, “It was interesting stepping into that space and being a little bit of an outsider in that way, but he could not have been more welcoming, and just the whole crew in general. He was just so relaxed and open, and I felt very at ease.”

Why J.K. Simmons Says He’s Not in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”
One can point to scheduling as the most obvious explanation for the non-reprisal. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” started production in August last year. Simmons, meanwhile, started filming “The Westies” that July and is listed on IMDB with several 2026 projects either completed or in post-production. As a main cast member on a new series, he likely had commitments that made a cameo less feasible to arrange. Juggling multiple projects at once is already difficult to manage.
There’s also the matter of story fit. In the MCU, J. Jonah Jameson has been a loudmouth commentator who revealed Peter Parker’s identity but hasn’t been woven into Peter’s personal life the way he was in Raimi’s films, where he served as Peter’s boss at the Daily Bugle. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” already carries a heavy narrative load: Peter’s emotional turmoil, the presence of Hulk and Punisher, Sink’s mysterious role, a roster of Marvel villains, and the fallout among Peter’s friends. Adding the commentator without a meaningful purpose could have felt forced. For a fan-favorite like Simmons, a cameo should do more than wink at the audience; it should earn its place.
Is This The End of Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson?
Not necessarily. The door isn’t closed. Brand New Day is shaping up to be a major box office event, and the Spider-Man franchise shows no signs of slowing. Holland has been talking publicly about future directions, pitching a recurring partnership with the Punisher and a mentor/mentee dynamic between Peter and Miles Morales. I
If Spider-Man remains a fixture in the MCU and continues to patrol New York, it’s easy to imagine J. Jonah Jameson still being there to stir the pot. A return in Spider-Man 5 down the line would make sense: it would give Simmons a chance to appear only if the story calls for him and if scheduling allows. That’s the kind of cameo that respects both the actor and the character and keeps the element of surprise intact.
Jameson’s absence from “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is a disappointment for some fans, but it’s also a reminder of how many moving parts go into blockbuster filmmaking. For now, Simmons is focused on new projects, and Marvel is juggling a crowded, ambitious story. If and when the Daily Bugle’s most notorious editor reappears, it will likely be because the filmmakers found a place for him that matters, and because Simmons’ calendar finally cleared.
