Dead Man’s Bones, the rock duo of Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields, ended its 17-year recording hiatus on Oct. 27 with the release of “Lost in the Night,” its first new song since 2009.
The single, out on Anti- Records, follows the band’s self-titled debut album, which the duo made with the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir.
What Dead Man’s Bones Released
“Lost in the Night” arrived with a black-and-white music video starring Rain Spencer and Noah Jupe. The pair leave a cemetery behind and wander city streets through the night, a fitting look for a band with a trademark spooky style.
According to a press release, Gosling and Shields tried several Los Angeles studios without finding the sound they wanted. They took two guitars, two drum machines and two synthesizers to a farm outside the city and recorded the song in a single day. Tim Anderson, who produced the 2009 album, returned to produce the track, according to Rolling Stone.
The single is also available on 12-inch vinyl through the band’s official store. The Instagram post announcing the release ended with a promise of “More coming soon.”
How the Comeback Was Teased
The band first teased its return on Oct. 22 with a short Instagram video. In it, a man recites an eerie verse about dead men’s bones waiting to rise, and a young girl’s voice yells the release date, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Gosling’s partner, Eva Mendes, had been hinting at the return on social media, writing, “Trying to summon new music from Dead Man’s Bones.” After the announcement, she posted, “He came through on his promise to me.” On release day, she thanked Spencer and Jupe for appearing in the video.
For a band that had been silent since 2009, the Oct. 27 release gave fans their first new music in nearly two decades.
Background on the Band
Dead Man’s Bones began as a side project for Gosling, known for his film career, and Shields after the two bonded over a love of horror, especially Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion. Their only full-length release remains the 2009 self-titled album, which built the band’s reputation for a ghost-and-monster-themed sound layered with choral vocals.
What’s Next
“Lost in the Night” landed just days before Halloween. The band hasn’t said whether the single is a standalone release or the first taste of a second album, and there’s no word yet on live shows. That “More coming soon” line suggests the haunting isn’t over.
