Daily Devotional Monday Motivation | June 1, 2026
Happy Monday! It’s time for your daily devotional. Jesus was a master teacher, using parables relatable to everyday life. He wanted hearers to grasp the realness of the Kingdom of Heaven and to walk in the standard of righteousness God requires. In Matthew 13, Jesus tells parables to the multitude, then expounds them privately to His disciples. In this daily devotional, Jesus imparts spiritual truths to those who’ll receive.
A Grain of Mustard Seed
Jesus begins a brief parable in verse 31, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field.” Here, Jesus likens the kingdom to a mustard seed, which is very small but grows into a large shrub or tree that can reach twelve feet. Jesus paints a picture of kingdom growth, which began as a small group in Jerusalem and grew tremendously through the gospel message.
On the day of Pentecost, there were around 120 believers in the Upper Room, and believers have not stopped being added. Not everything begins on a large scale, but that doesn’t mean it’s insignificant. Jesus started with twelve followers. He didn’t come from the prominent rankings of men in society, but was as unnoticeable as a mustard seed lying on the earth.
What began with a tiny shoot on a lofty mountain became a tremendous tree providing nesting and shade for every type of bird. In today’s daily devotional, you can find security in God’s Kingdom because you abide in the shelter of the Most High.
The Greatest Among Herbs

Jesus ends the parable in verse 32: “Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.” Jesus calls the mustard seed the least or smallest of all seeds. The seed that doesn’t look like it’ll produce something so large and expansive, produces the largest of the sower’s plants.
The tree attracts birds, which represent the Gentiles who will come from every nation to take refuge in its shade. In your daily devotional, Jesus declares that “they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.”
Find Refuge in Its Shade
Some have questioned why Jesus calls the mustard seed the smallest of seeds and the full-grown plant the largest of plants, as there are smaller seeds and larger plants. But Jesus is speaking proverbially rather than botanically. He emphasizes the change in size from small to large, as well as its rapid growth. In this daily devotional, the mustard seed reaches maturity in sixty to ninety days after starting as the smallest seed in the garden. From a handful of believers in Jerusalem going from house to house, the gospel has reached even remote areas of the globe.
You Can Advance God’s Kingdom on Earth
In Monday’s daily devotional, the Kingdom of Heaven is a mighty moving force that cannot be stopped. Isaiah 60 proclaims, “Nations will come to your light, and “All assemble and come to you;
your sons come from afar.” In one day, Pentecost saw 3000 souls added to the church, and by 200 AD, it was 200,000 strong. That’s mustard seed growth! In today’s daily devotional, the kingdom of Heaven will continue to grow until Jesus returns. If you haven’t already, seek the eternal God, who is your refuge, “for underneath are the everlasting arms.”
