In daily devotion, an open Bible to John.

Happy Monday! It’s time for your daily devotion. One of the great characteristics of Jesus is that He never failed to identify Himself by word and deed. John’s gospel records seven “I AM” statements Jesus made that give us deeper insight into His ministry on Earth. In today’s daily devotion, get to know Jesus through His first “I AM” statement.

In declaring “I AM,” Jesus identifies with God, who revealed His name to Moses at the burning bush: “I AM WHO I AM.” God told Moses to tell Israel that “I AM” sent him. When Jesus made “I AM” statements, He was revealing His divinity. In your daily devotion, trust Jesus’ declarations about Himself, for He is God’s divine Son.

The Bread Multiplies

In John 6:1, after the multitude follows Jesus because of His miracles, He ascends a mountain, sits with His disciples, and scans the crowd. In verse 5, Jesus asks Philip, “Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” Jesus knows He will perform a miracle, but tests their faith.  Andrew mentions a young boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. After instructing the disciples to have them sit, Jesus takes the loaves, gives thanks, and they multiply. He does the same with the fish. In your daily devotion, Jesus’ miraculous acts inform the Jews that He is the Son of God.

Seeing this miracle,  the people are ready to take Him and make Him their king. However, Jesus departs to pray alone. Jesus teaches that when things in your life take a turn, your first response is prayer. The disciples head to Capernaum by ship, and a tempestuous storm arises. Then they see Jesus walking on the sea. He enters the boat, saying, “It is I; be not afraid,” and they immediately reach shore. In this daily devotion, trust the Miracle Worker is who He says He is, and He can deliver you from whatever storm you face.

The True Bread

In daily devotion, many loaves of bread are shown as when Jesus multiplied bread to feed 5000 men.

The next day, the people Jesus fed came to Caperneum seeking Him. But in verse 27, Jesus admonishes them: “Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life. He tells them they are to believe in the One sent by God. Asking for a sign that God has sent Him, they refer to the bread that Moses gave in the wilderness.

However, Jesus proclaims that it isn’t Moses, but the Father, who provides the true bread from heaven. In verse 33, Jesus states, “For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.” Jesus didn’t compare Himself to earthly bread, for He is the Bread sent from Heaven. In today’s daily devotion, Jesus doesn’t make rash claims; He is who He says He is.

The Bread of Life

In verse 34, the crowd asks Jesus for the bread He speaks of. Then He declares,  “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” The Jews spoke of bread to fill their stomachs so they wouldn’t hunger again. In your daily devotion, Jesus identifies Himself as the Bread of Life for those who seek God.

Jesus is Your Bread

In Monday’s daily devotion, in the natural, bread satisfies one’s hunger, which is why it metaphorically relates to Jesus as the One who satisfies our souls. In Jesus’ I AM statement, He clearly identifies Himself. You don’t need to seek another source. In today’s daily devotion, know that Jesus is your Bread of Life.
