Samuel L. Jackson recently dropped a major “Avengers: Secret Wars” casting update. Nick Fury will soon reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, he will not appear on-screen in “Avengers: Doomsday,” according to Samuel L. Jackson, who says that the spymaster will return in “Avengers: Secret Wars.” The casting update for “Avengers: Secret Wars,” came during Jackson’s interview with the Direct’s Jeff Ewing on Oct. 7, 2026.
“Avengers: Secret Wars” Casting Update: Samuel L. Jackson Confirms Nick Fury’s Return

Jackson made the confirmation while speaking with Ewing on the red carpet for “The Beast,” which was released on Oct. 9, 2026. Ewing told the actor he loves his portrayal of Nick Fury and noted that it has been a while since audiences have seen the character. Per The Direct, Jackson simply said, “Next movie… [The] movie after this one.” The last time Fury was on screen was in “The Marvels,” which was released in theaters on Nov. 10, 2023.
Jackson did not divulge any more details about his role in “Avengers: Secret Wars.” When asked if he could say anything more, Jackson said, “I have no idea. [Marvel] hasn’t told me anything, other than ‘You’re not going to be in this movie. You’ll be in the next.'” Jackson’s statements run counter to a social media post made by The Cosmic Circus’ Alex Perez on July 15, 2025, when he posted on X, “Hearing Fury’s back for #AvengersDoomsday.” He also added the Avengers logo at the end.
The Direct reported on that post on Oct. 8, 2025. Fury has a different role in the MCU than he did during the Infinity Saga, when he assembled the Avengers. Since then, his Multiverse Saga storyline has distanced him from that role. He stayed off Earth for the most part, battling through how much the Blip affected him, before returning in “Secret Invasion” and “The Marvels.” Fury’s strategic skill and knowledge of various threats could be an asset to the mission ahead.
Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson, has not been confirmed for “Avengers: Doomsday.” However, she ranks among the strongest active heroes linked to Fury, so if she appears alongside him in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” that could be a logical possibility. That is speculation, not confirmation. Still, the heroes facing Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., would want every ally they can get.

Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and the Rumored “Avengers: Secret Wars” Battleworld Plot
The Battleworld plot is only a rumor, but it gives a sense of how big the movie could be. That rumor is the reason “Avengers: Secret Wars” appears set to gather nearly every Marvel star, which makes Fury’s return unsurprising. In the 2015 Marvel Comics version of “Secret Wars,” Doctor Doom rules Battleworld. Most residents accept, through brainwashing or coercion, that his actions were needed to rescue everyone. A handful of survivors from before the Multiverse collapse have kept all their memories, and they operate in secret to topple his regime.
If the film uses the setup, maybe Fury could have a role of assembling a resistance by gathering a group of survivors to help defeat Doctor Doom. It would also bring Jackson’s tenure full circle. Fury built the Avengers during the Infinity Saga, and Battleworld could have him assemble a fresh team from those Doom’s rewriting never touched.
The comics resistance is effective because it stays small and contained, and Fury could oversee a network like that. The role would echo “Secret Invasion,” where he battled enemies who looked like friends. He has also lived through Hydra’s takeover of SHIELD and the Skrulls’ betrayal, experience that suits a spymaster. Fury’s planning and direction could be exactly what the survivors need against Doom. This is all speculation not confirmation.
While promoting their Netflix film “The Electric State,” which was released on March 14, 2025, the Russo brothers confirmed in an interview with TechRadar that the “Secret Wars” comic runs in the 1980s and 2010s drew inspiration for the plots of “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Joe said to TechRadar when asked about which comic run had impact, “Well, we always create our own version of the story, so we use the comics as loose inspiration.”
Joe added that the 1908s “Secret Wars” version led him to grow interest in comic books, “But, you know, I grew up on the original run. That’s something that got me into Marvel comic books. The Hickman run is also fantastic [and they’re] very different from each other in a lot of ways, so we’ll draw inspiration from both of them.” For now, Fury’s role in the story is an open question, and the Battleworld rumors are just that, rumors. Avengers: Doomsday” is scheduled to premiere on Dec. 18, 2026, while “Avengers: Secret Wars” is scheduled for Dec. 17, 2027.
