Variety released the Miami Vice ’85 first look images showing Austin Butler as Sonny Crockett and Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs as filming begins on the Universal reboot. The two actors step into roles originally played by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in the 1984-1989 NBC series, as undercover Miami detectives.

Miami Vice ’85 Release Date and Production Details

  • Theatrical release date: May 19, 2028
  • Director: Joseph Kosinski
  • Format: Filmed for IMAX
  • Production: Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski

Kosinski, who recently directed Top Gun: Maverick and F1, is steering the project for Universal. Dan Gilroy wrote the screenplay based on characters by Anthony Yerkovich. The film is produced by Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski.

What We Know About The Miami Vice ’85 Cast

Beyond Butler and Jordan, the film has assembled a sizable supporting cast. The cast also includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins and André Holland.

Michael Irby plays Lt. Lou Rodriguez, originally the head of the Metro-Dade Police Department’s Organized Crime Bureau, Vice Division, played by Gregory Sierra in the original series.

Why The Original Pilot Matters For This Reboot

The new film draws its inspiration from the Miami Vice pilot episode, titled “Brother’s Keeper,” which aired on Sept. 16, 1984. Yerkovich wrote that episode, and Michael Mann served as executive producer on the original series.

In the pilot, Tubbs arrives in Miami seeking revenge for his slain brother, while Crockett has his own motive to bring down drug lord Calderone, who killed his partner, Eddie Rivera. Those dual revenge arcs gave the original show its emotional core, and the reboot’s grounding in that same episode suggests Kosinski’s version will lean on that same setup between the two detectives.

Leguizamo’s exact role in the film has not been disclosed.

What’s Next For Miami Vice ’85

The film arrives May 19, 2028.
