Xbox has officially created a new internal group called Xbox Labs, and the whole thing is dedicated to studying AI-powered game mods and ports. The announcement came from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who called the team a small group of game makers, engineers, and scientists whose job is to turn emerging ideas into things players and developers can actually experience. Does anyone else find it funny that this lab opens while the company is still swinging the jobs axe like a gardener who hates plants?
A Small Team With Big Frankenstein Energy
Sharma said the lab grew out of experiments already underway at Xbox, including projects that translated Windows PC builds to run on Apple Silicon and ported other games into web browsers. That sounds less like a corporate roadmap and more like a bunch of brilliant weirdos in a basement yelling Watch this before something either catches fire or wins an award. The group will focus on decompiling and recompiling games, which is a polite way of saying they want to crack open the toy box and see if the toys can run on a toaster.
Why AI Mods Are The New Wild West
Modders have been using AI models to remix existing titles for a while now, often without any official blessing from publishers. Rather than send lawyers with cease-and-desist letters and sad faces, Xbox appears to be studying the trend directly. Sharma said the early experiments challenge long-held assumptions about the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games. That is a lot of big words for what we saw: a kid ran Doom on a pregnancy test and got jealous.
The Weird Numbers Behind The Hype
Sharma tied this whole initiative to the broader push toward AI agents. Coding became the first major workload automated by AI agents because they can write, run, and test software, and games share similar properties. People spend more than 72 billion hours a year playing Xbox games, which is roughly five times the estimated global time spent writing code. I have spent at least four of those hours staring at a loading screen wondering if I left the oven on, so maybe I am part of the problem.
Old Games Get A Second Life Or A Weird One
The practical upside for players could eventually mean easier access to older titles on devices they were never built for, plus more tools for remixing games. Want to play a 2004 racing game on your smart fridge while wearing oven mitts? Xbox Labs might be your new best friend. The company says the lab will not pull resources away from making great games, developing hardware, and responsibly managing its intellectual property, which is corporate speak for please do not sue us for that thing we are about to do.
Sharma Promises Tools For Everyone
Sharma committed to sharing whatever tools the lab produces with outside developers. She said that as they learn, they will share the tools they build with developers across the industry, just as they always have. That is a nice sentiment, assuming the tools do not accidentally turn every game into a sentient chatbot that refuses to let you lose. Xbox has not detailed a launch timeline, specific technologies, or who will lead the team day to day, which is either mysterious or just very relaxed.
The Dark Cloud Over The Fun Factory

Xbox Labs arrives during what Polygon and Eurogamer describe as a turbulent stretch for the division. The company has planned 3,200 reductions, with 1,600 already cut and another 1,600 expected by the end of the fiscal year. That is not a trim. That is a haircut that took the ears. Halo development is moving to Activision for the next mainline entry, where a new purpose-built team is handling the franchise, while Halo Studios is reportedly down to a skeleton crew of around 20 developers whose only job is keeping the lights on for existing games, though Microsoft has only confirmed a small support team remains.
That is not handing someone the car and keeping a lug wrench. That is handing someone the car and keeping a single lug nut in your pocket. Obsidian Entertainment is shifting under Bethesda to work on a new Fallout game. Double Fine and Compulsion Games went independent with their IP intact.
Ninja Theory and Undead Labs were sold to new owners. Arkane is in a required consultation process under French law to review strategic options, which could end in sale or closure, and that process runs until the end of the year, though no final decision has been announced. Corporate speak for we are still deciding what to do with this one.
New IP Or Just New Packaging
In a company town hall, Sharma told employees the division will not survive without new intellectual property. She said they have to find new ways, and courage, to have invention on new IP. She also said they are backing their strongest franchises and want great games to become great global billion-dollar franchises.
I have a bias here, and I will stick to it: reviving old games with AI is cool, but it is not the same as making something that makes a kid in 2035 draw fan art on a lunch box. Xbox needs a new Master Chief, not just a remastered one.
What Comes Next Is Anyone’s Guess
Xbox has not announced an operational start date for Xbox Labs or named its leadership team. Modern Warfare 4 lands on October 23, 2026, with Fable and Clockwork Revolution slated for next year. The studios Xbox parted ways with were known for producing distinctive, original games, which makes Sharma’s new IP messaging feel like a motivational poster taped over a hole in the wall. Xbox wants to be a lab, a museum, and a blockbuster factory all at once. That is not a strategy. That is a group chat with too many tabs open.
