Winbirri Vineyard: 1,100-pound theft is a shocking, bitter blow

Winbirri Vineyard lost about 1,100 pounds of grapes, enough for 400 wine bottles, owner Lee Dyer says. He discovered stripped rows during harvest.

Winbirri Vineyard owner Lee Dyer says thieves took enough grapes to make about 400 bottles of wine from his family’s Norfolk business. He discovered stripped rows while harvesting Sept. 28, the BBC reports.

The missing crop weighed roughly 1,100 pounds and was valued at about 1,000 British pounds. Dyer said he reported the theft to Norfolk Police.

He believes an experienced group picked the grapes in the evening. That is his assessment, rather than a police finding. Sept. 28 is the date he noticed the loss, not a confirmed time of the theft.

A second year of missing grapes

Dyer said grapes had also been stolen the previous year. His father, Stephen, founded the Surlingham vineyard in 2007, and Lee took over in 2010.

For the family, the loss includes months of tending vines before harvest. Dyer said the repeat theft had left him considering additional security.
