It’s time for your Wednesday morning daily devotional. In Psalm 47, the Sons of Korah invite you to praise God for His greatness. Clapping, shouting, and singing are three ways you can extol an awesome God. Not only are you invited to praise God, but you’re also given reasons to do so. In today’s daily devotional, God deserves all your praise.
Celebrate Your King
Verse 1 says, “O clap your hands all ye people: shout unto God with the voice of triumph.” A conversation has arisen in the church world about congregants being asked to raise their hands, shout, or praise God. Shouldn’t these responses be automatic when you’re in God’s presence? It should be a continuation of your daily praise; lifting your hands and shouting aren’t limited to church. Although this psalm was sung in the temple, people could sing it as they went about their day.
When you love the Lord, you don’t have to be prodded to praise in a church service. Clapping your hands unto God is a great way to let sound ring out in celebration of your King. Also, shouting, or lifting your voice, involves the natural instrument God gave you. In your daily devotional, your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, and praise should flow freely from it each day.
God Watches Over Israel
In verse 2, a reason is given for clapping and shouting unto God: “For the Lord most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.” The Lord is called “terrible,” meaning His greatness deserves reverence. Verses 3 and 4 say that He subdues people and nations, and He gives Israel an inheritance. God watches over Israel and fights against her enemies; His covenant with Israel began with Abraham.
God was with Moses when He fought the Amalekites; His divine protection was with Joshua as he conquered Jericho, Ai, and other Canaanite territories. He brought victory to Gideon, Barak, and Samson. He was with David combating the Philistines, and Hezekiah against Syria. Israel’s history alone is reason to praise God. In this daily devotional, look back over your life and recall the times God delivered you. Then shout His praise.
Sing Praises to God
Verse 6 exclaims, “Sing praises to God, sing praises, sing praises unto our King, sing praises.” Singing to a God who is good and all-powerful isn’t only appropriate, but it’s expected. Throughout the psalms, you’re invited to sing unto God. Psalm 96 instructs you to sing a new song unto the Lord. Singing shows joy and gladness, and you’re to “rejoice in the Lord always.” Nehemiah observed a law requiring joy in the king’s presence. Likewise, the Israelites were to enter His gates with thanksgiving.
You can’t give thanks with a closed mouth; try rejoicing with a poker face. Singing expresses delight in the Lord. In verse 7, singing is because “God is the king of all the earth.” In the presence of earthly kings, there’s great ceremony, clapping, and singing. How much more should the King of the Earth be celebrated? In your daily devotional, you don’t need a voice like Pavarotti to sing unto the Lord; you need a heart of joy.
Your God Deserves the Praise
In Wednesday’s daily devotional, verses 8-9 declare that God reigns over the heathen nations and sits upon His holy throne. All mankind is to praise Him, for He sustains all things by His power. In today’s daily devotional, God is in His holy temple; exalt His name, for He deserves your praise.
