It’s Wednesday and time for your daily devotional. Recently, Pastor Johnathan Shuttlesworth commented on people not seeing Christ in Psalm 23. David’s psalm is one of the most well-known passages in the Bible. In today’s daily devotional, Psalm 23 is a prophetic glimpse of the Shepherd of our souls, woven throughout the Old Testament.
Peace and Rest
In Psalm 23, David depicts a Shepherd guiding and caring for His sheep. He gives peace and rest to the flock; He restores and refreshes their souls, providing them with safety and protection. His sheep don’t fear the unknown. Intimidation by man disappears because the Shepherd is all they need.
His goodness and mercy surround you like a beam of light from heaven, and you’re comforted knowing He’ll be with you forever. In your daily devotional, David praises the Shepherd of Israel, but prophetically speaks of the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ.
Christ is Our Salvation
1 Peter 2:25 says, “For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.” From the foundation of the world, Christ is our salvation. God ordained that Christ lay aside His majesty, come to earth, and fulfill God’s will, ultimately dying for our sins. God has such great love for mankind, declaring them redeemable and providing them a Savior. In this daily devotional, that Saviour is the Good Shepherd who comes to restore the Sheep.
Savior and Shepherd
The words “saviour” and “shepherd” go hand in hand because they both protect, provide, guide, rescue, and deliver. Jesus is all of that to you, and He is your Source of Life. Naturally, shepherds are invested in their sheep; they provide pasture and calm rest areas. They oversee their nutrition, health, and well-being. They even protect them from dangerous animals that attempt to harm them.
Jesus, as your Saviour, delivers you from Satan’s power, leading and guiding you on your life’s spiritual journey. In today’s daily devotional, there’s only One Shepherd who can keep you safe and protected.
One Fold and One Shepherd
In John 10:11, Jesus identifies Himself: “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” Also, He knows His sheep and is known of them. In verse 15, He lays down His life for the sheep. Here, Christ describes His attributes as the Savior.
Jesus reveals His world reach in 10:16: “And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.” Jesus is the Savior of the world. In your daily devotional, John 3:16 reveals Him as the One God sent because He so loved the world.
Jesus’s Identity and Mission
Verse 17 reveals the Risen Savior: “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.” Christ’s commitment to His sheep, like a shepherd, and His redeeming power as Savior come together in this verse.
