Peak Dev Responds to Lazy Dev Cycle Accusations
The indie simulation game, Peak, which was released last year, has become a smash hit, selling over 10 million copies of the game as of August of last year. I remember watching tons of videos of people streaming the game nonstop, and it’s no wonder. The goal of the game is simple: Reach the Peak of the mountain on the island you’re stranded on before the fog, or anything else on the island kills you.
I always believed the simplest games were always entertaining, if done right. And many people have enjoyed the game so far. When the game was first released, the devs came out with many updates that added a lot of content, including new areas and items to help players on their journey upwards. However, in recent months, those updates have slowed down, and people have taken notice. Here’s what players had to say about the situation, and the devs’ response to people’s concerns.
Players React to Slow Update Cycle for Peak
During “Landfall Day,” Landfall’s annual round of announcements on April 1, which featured a hilarious in-game event, where instead of helping your friends up the mountain, you kick them off, many players expressed extreme joy and excitement for this minor update to the game. It wasn’t until one X user decided to express some ire due to the devs slowing down major updates for the game, with Landfall and Aggro Crab even announcing they’re ending development of Peak this year.
The post from the user has since been deleted by the devs; however, here’s the full X post from the unnamed user:
“Y’all are mad at Landfall for not releasing a game, I’m mad at Landfall for their lazy dev cycle for Peak when they could be doing so much more with it considering they’re ending development of it this year”.
Another reply made a similar comment:
“But why? Its an Online Game for 10 bucks. It would be so nice to get new bioms or Features. Thats how the gaming industry works these days.”
Landfall and Aggro Crab Devs Respond to Concerns
Since the few comments on the slower updates were posted, Landfall has replied to players’ concerns about updates on Peak and addressed their concerns about the devs stopping updates on the game coming later this year. Landfall addressed both complaints, stating in their own X post:
PEAK has had sooo many updates tho! Neither us or Aggro Crab are live service studios, any update is a bonus not a right.
And:
We have done a lot of updates with biomes and featuresand we have at least one more. The industry used to be no updates – just release as is. We have gone way beyond that.
The fact that Landfall took the time to address these concerns pretty much negates the complaints altogether. Since Peak’s release last summer, Landfall has come out with three major updates, numerous hotfixes, patches, and a handful of smaller updates on the game, especially paying attention to a lot of the feedback from players who’ve garnered hundreds of hours replaying Peak. I commend how much work Landfall and Aggro Crab have put into the game, and it’s a little unfair that people would accuse them of being lazy.
Peak has had many substantial updates since its launch, and I would say that these updates made the game even better, especially the Mesa update, which I know many people enjoyed. If Landfall and Aggro Crab do end up ending development on Peak, I believe it’d be ok too. Games don’t need constant updates to be good. It’s definitely expected in today’s era of gaming, where co-op games are constantly coming out with updates and new content; however, if a game has run its course with content, then you shouldn’t overload it with pointless updates.
