Crunchyroll describes the premise: “Keroro is Sergeant Frog, the leader of a platoon of warriors sent to conquer planet Earth. Now, this once proud soldier spends more time wielding a vacuum than he does the weapons of war.”
What we know about the Sgt. Frog anime
The franchise is based on Mine Yoshizaki’s manga Sgt. Frog, also known as Keroro Gunsō. An earlier television anime adaptation produced by Sunrise ran from 2004 to 2011 and generated five feature films, Anime News Network reported.
Crunchyroll added that original 2004 TV series to its catalog in 2021. In North America, Funimation released two seasons on DVD after ADV Films had licensed but never released the show. Discotek later licensed the series and has been releasing all 358 episodes on SD Blu-ray by season, including seasons five through seven in 2024.
Tokyopop published 20 volumes of the original manga in North America before the company closed in 2011.
Why it matters: a 20th anniversary push
The new Keroro☆ series arrives alongside a broader anniversary push for the franchise. A new film, New Sgt. Frog the Movie: The Earth Is in Mortal Peril as Soon as We Come Back!, opened in Japan on June 26 as part of the franchise’s 20th anniversary, Anime News Network reported. The movie ranked No. 4 at the Japanese box office in its opening weekend, earning an estimated 150,809,200 yen, or about $927,900, in its first three days, according to Anime News Network.
What’s next
Fans can stream Keroro☆ with English subtitles on Crunchyroll outside Asia. The earlier 358-episode original series remains available through Discotek’s ongoing Blu-ray releases.
