Jagex has canceled RuneScape Reignited less than two weeks after announcing the project, scrapping a plan that had drawn heavy criticism from the game’s player base. Associate creative director Ryan Philpott, known to players as Mod Ryan, announced the decision in a blog post.
“It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it,” Philpott said.
What Happened To RuneScape Reignited
RuneScape Reignited was designed to introduce new character types on separate servers, giving new and returning players a way to restart the game from scratch. The announcement set off backlash from players, according to PC Gamer, who raised concerns about a potential split in the community, restrictions on how characters could interact with each other, and the possibility of a separate subscription payment for the new servers.
Jagex responded just days after the initial reveal with an apology, saying it was exploring major revisions to Reignited based on player feedback. The studio followed that with a more detailed list of proposed changes and asked players for further input before ultimately deciding to cancel the project entirely.
Philpott framed the cancellation around protecting the existing player base. “Our goal is to see Runescape grow again, with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community,” he said.
What It Means For Fans
Jagex is still moving forward with a player-facing offer tied to the scrapped initiative. New and returning players will get a 10-day free trial starting Dec. 2, with full access to all worlds and content in the live game rather than a separate server structure.
The studio also confirmed that RuneScape’s 2027 roadmap remains unchanged despite the cancellation, meaning Reignited’s demise does not appear to be pulling other planned content off the schedule.
Background On Jagex Reversals
The Reignited cancellation fits a pattern for Jagex when player backlash hits a critical mass. In 2023, the studio scrapped a planned RuneScape battle pass after players pushed back hard against it. In 2025, Jagex scrapped its Treasure Hunter microtransactions, which CEO Jon Bellamy tied to a broader transformation and a renewed focus on value and fairness for players.
Jagex has also been expanding the RuneScape universe on other fronts, including a fourth RuneScape MMO and animated series it announced separately, and a new entry teased with a dragon trailer at RuneFest.
What’s Next
Jagex has not announced a replacement plan for onboarding new and returning players beyond the Dec. 2 free trial. The original RuneScape Reignited announcement remains scrapped, and the studio says its attention now turns to the existing 2027 roadmap for the live game.
