Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will not be part of the Modern Warfare 4 Game Pass release when the shooter launches globally on Oct. 23, 2026, according to IGN. Players who want to play on day one will need to buy the game outright, and Microsoft has already started notifying Xbox Game Pass subscribers about the change.
That shift marks a real break from recent Call of Duty history, and it has left fans with plenty of questions about pricing, timing and what Xbox is actually trying to accomplish. Here’s what’s confirmed and what’s still unclear.
Is Modern Warfare 4 Launching On Xbox Game Pass?
No. Modern Warfare 4 will not launch day one on Game Pass, IGN reported. GameSpot confirmed the same, noting that recent changes to Xbox’s subscription service mean the game simply will not be available through Game Pass when it releases.
Instead, players will need to purchase the game directly. The standard edition costs $70, while the Vault Edition is priced at $100, according to IGN.
Why Isn’t Modern Warfare 4 Coming To Game Pass At Launch?
The decision traces back to Xbox boss Asha Sharma, who replaced Phil Spencer and chose to pull new Call of Duty releases out of Game Pass, adding them to the service one year after launch instead, per IGN. The move is part of a broader push to rebuild trust with hardcore Xbox fans and bring down subscription prices.
Microsoft reportedly views Call of Duty differently than its other first-party releases. IGN reported that the company considers the franchise a bigger release than titles like Gears of War: E-Day, Clockwork Revolution and Fable, all of which remain day one Game Pass launches. Microsoft wants to maximize both revenue and standalone game sales from Call of Duty specifically, according to the report.
When Will Modern Warfare 4 Arrive On Game Pass?
There’s no official date yet. The sources describe a general policy of adding mainline Call of Duty games to Game Pass about a year after release, but no source has confirmed that exact timeline applies to Modern Warfare 4 specifically. Anyone expecting a firm 2027 date should treat that as an estimate based on Xbox’s stated approach rather than a confirmed commitment.
Did Previous Call Of Duty Games Launch On Game Pass Day One?
Yes. Mainline Call of Duty titles previously launched day one on Game Pass in earlier years, according to IGN, which is part of why the policy change has drawn attention from subscribers. Microsoft’s decision to pull Modern Warfare 4 out of that arrangement represents a departure from that pattern.
What Else Is Available On Game Pass Around Modern Warfare 4’s Launch?
Battlefield 6 is arriving on Xbox Game Pass on Oct. 13, according to Gamerant, putting it on the service 10 days before Modern Warfare 4 launches. Subscribers will be able to play Battlefield 6 through their subscription without an extra purchase, giving Game Pass members a shooter alternative while they wait to see if or when Modern Warfare 4 joins the lineup.
Can Players Still Get Early Access To Modern Warfare 4 Before Launch?
Preordering the game grants early access to the multiplayer beta later in the year, according to GameSpot. That early access applies to preorder customers rather than Game Pass subscribers, since the title is not part of the subscription at launch.
What Is Modern Warfare 4 About?
Modern Warfare 4 is a direct sequel to 2023’s Modern Warfare 3, according to Kotaku. The campaign is set in South Korea, with players joining a South Korean military squad during a North Korean invasion. Captain Price returns in the story as the leader of a new rogue task force, Kotaku reported. What’s Next For Modern Warfare 4 And Game Pass?
Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on Oct. 23, available for purchase at $70 for the standard edition or $100 for the Vault Edition. No official Game Pass addition date has been announced. The policy shift fits into Xbox’s wider strategy around its new IP and first-party lineup, and subscribers hoping to track changes to the service can follow monthly additions like the ones detailed in Total Apex’s October 2026 Game Pass roundup.
