Kojima Shares Physint Updates: Casting, Story

Hideo Kojima revealed casting, story and development updates for Physint, his action-espionage game, in his first Koji10 podcast in over a year.

Hideo Kojima revealed new details about Physint, his upcoming Metal Gear-inspired action-espionage game, during the first episode of his Koji10 podcast in over a year, which aired Monday.

Physint Kojima Updates On Casting And Story

Kojima described Physint as a project celebrating his 40th anniversary as a game developer. According to a summary by X user Genki_JPN of the 79-minute English-subtitled episode posted to YouTube, he said he wants the game to honor the roots of Metal Gear Solid while offering a new interactive experience with a different kind of spy action filled with fresh ideas.

On casting, he revealed he has already pitched all of the actors appearing in Physint himself, with about 70% of them being Kojima fans. Bill Skarsgard, Charlie Fraser and Minami Hamabe have already been scanned for their roles. Many character names have been finalized, and Kojima confirmed he has completed the plot. Filming will start next year.

Kojima also said he approaches each project with the mindset that it may be his final one.

What This Means For Fans

The updates signal active progress on Physint after a turbulent publishing change. Sony canceled the project as its publisher earlier this year, and Microsoft picked it up as part of a deal that reportedly costs substantially less than Xbox’s typical premium game budget, possibly under $200 million. Microsoft’s agreement also covers film and TV adaptations.

The game remains several years away. He said last year that Physint is 5 to 6 years from release, and his other Microsoft project, the horror game OD, a spiritual successor to the cancelled PT, is expected to launch before Physint.

Despite being a new franchise, Physint carries the weight of fan expectations. Kojima said he got the idea for Physint partly from overwhelming fan demand for another Metal Gear game, which he cannot make because he no longer works at Konami. Kojima believes Physint could become his most commercial game yet.

Background

Physint is Kojima Productions’ first major project since he left Konami. His last title, Death Stranding, released through Sony and reportedly barely broke even. Bill Skarsgard has been announced as the lead.

What’s Next

Filming begins next year. Until then, OD is expected to release before Physint, giving fans another Kojima title to anticipate in the near term.
