Modders have done what Pearl Abyss could not, or would not, or kept saying it was too hard to do. A functional co-op mod for Crimson Desert is already in testing, and it works better than anyone had any right to expect. This is the same community that put multiplayer into “Dragon’s Dogma 2” before Capcom lifted a finger, so maybe we should stop being surprised.
Riding Horses That Do Not Exist
The modder behind this project goes by No-Context2224 on Reddit, which is the kind of username that tells you absolutely nothing about a person except that they were late to the username party. They posted footage of a test session with a friend over Steam, and the results are genuinely wild for something that should not exist. Both players can see each other run, jump, glide, climb walls, and pull up onto ledges.
Attacks and skills show up with full animations. Equipment changes are visible. Shared damage on enemies is being tested, which means if your buddy hits a guy in his world, that same guy feels it in yours. The whole thing connects through Steam without port forwarding, which is the kind of detail that only matters to people who have spent an afternoon screaming at router settings.
Chickens Are A Single Player Experience
But let us talk about what does not work, because that is where things get funny. Worlds are not synchronized, so each player exists in their own version of the map. Enemies are not in the same spot for both people, which means co-op is less “fighting side by side” and more “two lunatics swinging swords at ghosts only they can see.”
The absolute best failure is the mount system. One player’s horse does not show up on the other player’s screen, so your friend just watches you ride through the air on an invisible steed like some kind of glitched-out cowboy wizard. Also, pulling trees and grabbing chickens only shows up for the person doing it. Your friend grabs a chicken, and you see nothing. The chicken has been grabbed in a dimension you cannot access.
Crimson Desert Multiplayer Excuses Exposed

I have to say it, and some people will not like it. Pearl Abyss has been dancing around the multiplayer question for months, and their excuses have gotten thinner every time. The CEO said the team “attempted to implement multiplayer internally” but ran into “graphical sacrifices” related to hardware limits.
That was in March. By July, the same CEO was saying there is “room for a multiplayer mode” and that they are “continuously reviewing” ways to let people enjoy the IP longer. Pick a lane. Either it is impossible because of hardware, or it is something you are studying. It cannot be both, and a single modder with a Reddit account just proved which one is closer to the truth.
The Original MMO That Forgot It Was One
Crimson Desert started life as a prequel to Black Desert Online, a full MMO with all the server architecture and persistence that implies. Then it morphed into a single-player action game with MMO bones still visible under the skin . The map is twice the size of Skyrim. There are fishing minigames and arm wrestling and dragon riding and mechanical mechs with rockets. This is a game that screams for other people to be in it, and Pearl Abyss looked at that and said, actually, no, play alone. The modders looked at the same game and said, hold my beer.
What Happens When Mods Work Better
The mod is early. The worlds do not sync. The horses are haunted. Quest progress, loot, and inventory are all separate, which is a design choice that probably was not a choice but a limitation. But the foundation is there. Two people in the same space, seeing each other move, fight, and change gear. That is not nothing. That is the hardest part. Syncing enemies and fixing the horse invisibility is cleanup work compared to building the whole framework from scratch, and this person did it without a studio budget or a team of engineers.
Pearl Abyss can keep “studying” and “reviewing” and talking about server structures and platform stability. The modding community will have a working co-op build before the official one exists, and it will probably be less compromised. The horse thing will get fixed. The chicken thing will get fixed. And somewhere in a boardroom in Seoul, someone will look at a Reddit post and realize they got beaten to their own idea by a guy whose username is a number.
