A modder has converted Diablo 2: Resurrected into a first-person VR game using community tools, but Blizzard’s file checker crashes it after one minute.
Reddit user fantasticauthor2736 built the mod using existing community tools and posted videos demonstrating it in action. The project is not yet officially published.
How The Diablo 2 VR Mod Works
Diablo 2: Resurrected appears as a 2D isometric game, but the full 3D geometry already exists in the engine, it’s rendered from a top-down angle. Modder emmericp created D2R-3D, a camera-control tool that unlocks those 3D assets. According to IGN, fantasticauthor2736 built the VR mod on top of it.
Fantasticauthor2736 takes that 3D conversion and layers two additional mods on top: FlatVR, which converts the perspective to first-person VR, and BodyWalk, which maps your real body movements to your character’s movement in the game. In the videos posted so far, players point motion controllers at enemies and cast spells like fireballs to attack.
The One-Minute Crash Problem
The biggest obstacle is a hard technical wall: Blizzard’s file integrity checker detects the mod’s code changes and crashes the game after roughly one minute of play. Since Diablo 2: Resurrected requires an online connection to function, there is no standard workaround that keeps the game stable long-term.
A technical solution exists but involves software that could theoretically allow cheating, so the modder has not released those details publicly. This same limitation will likely affect the VR mod when it is eventually released.
Current State And Next Steps
Videos show the mod working only in the first couple of zones of Diablo 2, with no intense combat sequences demonstrated yet. The mod has not been published as a download, though the creator has shared gameplay footage.
Even if fantasticauthor2736 releases the full version, expect the one-minute crash limitation to remain. This fan project is a technical proof of concept rather than a long-term playable alternative to the standard game.
