Mina the Hollower – A Bona Fied Classic Inspired by Zelda and Castlevania

Mina the Hollower is the Shovel Knight follow-up game from the development team Yacht Club Games. The game is a retro-style, combat-driven action adventure game inspired by the iconic handheld device Game Boy Color and its deep library. Originally revealed in 2022, not a ton of information has been out there about the game since that time. That changed on Friday at the Summer Games Fest presentation on June 6, when Yacht Club Games revealed a new trailer that includes the highly anticipated launch date.

Mina the Hollower is a Combat-Driven Action Adventure with Intriguing Features

The inspiration for the gameplay style of Mina the Hollower is clear; the game aims to modernize the classic Legend of Zelda and Castlevania games of the Game Boy Color and other retro consoles. By Yacht Club Games’ own description, the game aims to be a bona fide classic. The game is both fast-paced and action-driven, with smart and controlled gameplay. Fans of action-adventure should lean into the combat, which allows for creativity, strategy, and customization to balance party members and push through bosses in your own way.

The trailer for the game can be found below.

Retro games can be quite an enjoyable experience, evoking happy nostalgic memories, which is often why the game style has cult and popular followings. Even AAA studios lean into this, with Square Enix’s HD-2D art style and Pixel Remasters playing a prominent role in releases over the last several years. Mina the Hollower happily leans into this nostalgia, and does so in a way that is respectful to the classics while paving its own way into the industry.

Final Thoughts

Mina the Follower has a limited-time demo that is available on Steam right now. The demo will allow users to progress through the opening stage, which ends at the first major boss battle. Any player who makes progress on the demo can carry it over to the full game. It will also be playable at the Steam Next Fest starting June 9. The full version will be launched on Halloween, October 31.
