Mike Love rejoined the Beach Boys onstage at PNC Pavilion in Cincinnati on Saturday night, his first appearance with the Beach Boys since health issues forced tour cancellations. Love, 85, was escorted onstage with assistance, walked gingerly, and remained seated throughout, according to Consequence.
The show was part of a tour celebrating the 60th anniversary of Pet Sounds. Love is the only remaining classic-era Beach Boys member in the current touring lineup.
What Happened Onstage In Cincinnati
Love contributed only backing vocals during the Cincinnati performance, remaining seated throughout the set. John Stamos and his son Christian took on most of the lead vocal duties in his place, Consequence reported.
Stamos addressed the situation directly during the show. “He’s been going through some health issues. He’s had to cancel some shows.
But he would not miss tonight. We sort of said ‘stay home,’ but he was like, ‘No, I’m going to Cincinnati,'” Stamos said, according to Consequence.
Stamos went on to explain why Love insisted on performing despite his condition. “It’s what he loves the most. He loves the audience.
He loves the music. He knows how important it is to all of you. We’re all here to support him and give him as much love as we can,” he said.
What Is Known About Mike Love’s Health Issues
Love has not disclosed the specific nature of his current health issues. He previously said that the deaths of his sister Maureen and his cousin, Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson, combined with bouts of COVID-19 and bronchitis, had taken both an emotional and physical toll on him.
Those earlier remarks offer the only public explanation so far for the condition that led to the tour disruptions.
What It Means For Fans And The Pet Sounds Tour
Love’s brief but present role in Cincinnati signals that the band intends to keep the Pet Sounds anniversary tour moving forward with him involved, even in a limited capacity. Stamos and his son covering lead vocals allowed the show to continue while accommodating Love’s condition.
The arrangement gives fans a chance to see Love in person while placing the heavier vocal workload on his bandmates. It also underscores how central Love remains to the band’s identity as its last classic-era touring member.
What’s Next
The band has a show scheduled in Nashville on Sunday night, followed by dates in Florida and Virginia in November.
