Taylor Sheridan says the central struggle of his crime drama “Mayor of Kingstown” comes from a piece of his own life, telling Town & Country that the show’s premise is “pretty autobiographical.” The creator pointed specifically to the situation facing Michael McLusky, the character played by Jeremy Renner in the Michigan-set series.

Sheridan’s comment gives fans a rare window into how his personal history shaped one of his biggest shows, even as he was careful to frame it as one aspect of the story rather than a direct retelling of his own life.

What Sheridan Said About “Mayor Of Kingstown’s” Autobiographical Roots

Sheridan told Town & Country the connection is less about plot specifics and more about the emotional bind at the heart of McLusky’s character. “Here’s a guy in a place that he hates, attempting to hold this place together instead of leaving,” Sheridan said. “That, to me, was pretty autobiographical, because there I was stuck in L.A. That’s what that was.”

The remark ties the “Mayor of Kingstown” autobiographical element directly to Sheridan’s years in Los Angeles while he worked to establish himself as a screenwriter. He did not elaborate on what specifically made those years difficult, but the frustration of feeling trapped clearly stuck with him enough to shape McLusky’s arc.

How Sheridan’s Own Escape From L.A. Differs From His Character’s

Where the comparison breaks down, by Sheridan’s own account, is the ending. McLusky stays in Kingstown and keeps trying to hold the place together. Sheridan did not do that in Los Angeles. He eventually left for good.

His departure started in 2013, when he purchased the 600-acre Bosque Ranch in Weatherford, Texas. He and his family made the move to Texas permanent in 2020. In 2022, an investor group led by Sheridan went further, purchasing the historic Four Sixes Ranch in Guthrie, Texas.

Sheridan told Town & Country that his current lifestyle reflects just how far he has pulled back from the city that once held him. “I don’t leave the ranch,” he said, adding that visitors, including celebrities tied to his various projects, come to him instead.

Why The Comparison Matters For Fans Of The Show

For viewers of “Mayor of Kingstown,” the quote offers context for why McLusky’s predicament feels so specific and lived-in. Sheridan was not drawing on research or secondhand stories when he built that part of the character. He was drawing on how it felt to be stuck somewhere he wanted to leave.

That does not mean every beat of McLusky’s story maps onto Sheridan’s biography. Sheridan’s comments to Town & Country focused on the feeling of being trapped and responsible for a place, not on specific plot points or decisions McLusky makes in the series.

Sheridan has built a reputation across multiple Paramount projects for drawing on personal experience and firsthand knowledge of specific places and industries, a pattern also visible in other shows in his growing television portfolio, including “Landman” and “Tulsa King.”

What’s Next

No new details about an upcoming season of “Mayor of Kingstown” were included in Sheridan’s conversation with Town & Country. Fans looking for more on Sheridan’s expanding slate of series can track developments on other titles in his orbit, including Sicario 3 and the renewed Tulsa King.
