The long-discussed live-action Naruto movie seems to be getting closer to reality, but many fans are already nervous before production and filming have even officially begun.
While the initial news of Destin Daniel Cretton’s hiring to the project as the director brought a wave of excitement following the massive success of his recent movie, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and previously beloved film, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”, the newest leaks surrounding the upcoming film may have tempered that excitement.
Big Character Changes Threaten the Live-Action Naruto Adaptation

Change is inevitable with any live-action adaptation. Whether the source material is a book, comic, or play, changes are a natural part of the process as a new creative team takes a stab at it.
Sadly, live-action anime adaptations have often led to terrible results, and fear is growing that the live-action Naruto film will not escape that curse.
According to leaks from Daniel Ritchtman, Naruto will go from the beloved, hyperactive, knuckle-headed ninja known for pulling pranks in the anime to a big ninja history nerd. That alone suggests the team behind the live-action Naruto film may not fully understand the character. While Naruto is lauded for his constant hard work and never giving up to chase his dream, book smarts were the last thing he had. Part of the reason he took so long to become Hokage at the end of the story was his severe lack of ninja knowledge.
Other parts of the leak have indicated that Sasuke, not Naruto, will be in love with Sakura. While this doesn’t seem like a big change at first glance, since those two characters end up married in the future, fans have quickly pointed out how it fundamentally alters Sasuke’s character in his youth. Sasuke is a loner with no attachments after his family’s death, which is why he can betray the Leaf and go rogue. While he develops bonds with Team 7 and values them over time, him being a teenager in love betrays his original character’s mindset and clashes with his primary goal of revenge.
As for Sakura, reports indicate she will undergo the biggest change, since she already has access to some of the powers she gets later in the story. Furthermore, she is said to come from a wealthy family, and her father died in the tragic attack Kurama had on the village.
While it’s easy to see why the new creative team would want to make Sakura more compelling based on her initial portrayal as the clear weakest member of the team with little relevance to the story, these decisions are still massive departures from her character. Sakura’s clear weakness, when compared to the other two members of her team, is her biggest motivation for change, and her status as the only “normal” one with a happy family allows her to feel different from the tragic backstories that help form Naruto and Sasuke’s bond.
The Adaptation May Rush Some Mysteries

Naruto’s lineage was almost meant to be one of the bigger mysteries in the early part of the series. As an orphan hated by the village, it made sense for him to be a nobody with a terrible curse inflicted on him. For many fans, one of Naruto’s most appealing traits was how he dealt with the awful hand life dealt him.
Through the leaks, though, it is revealed that the adaptation will forsake that idea and position Naruto’s status as a Jinchuriki as a result of him being from a special bloodline, since only certain people can become a host for a tailed beast.
While Lionsgate has yet to confirm the rumors, they do indicate trouble could be brewing for the anticipated project. The live-action film is expected to start production in 2027 with a theatrical release in 2028.
