A second season of HBO’s Lanterns has been in development for several months, but the show has not been officially renewed, according to Polygon. Christopher Cantwell has stepped in as showrunner alongside Chris Mundy, while Damon Lindelof and Tom King are not returning for the follow-up season.
The Lanterns Season 1 finale aired Sunday on HBO and HBO Max, closing out a run that became one of the platform’s biggest launches in years.
Lanterns Season 2 Development Status Explained
Development work and an official greenlight are two different things, and Lanterns currently sits in the first category. Polygon reported that the writers room has been active for months under Cantwell and Mundy, but HBO has not announced a renewal.
DC writer Grant Morrison, asked how a second season might play out, offered a noncommittal response. “We’ll see,” Morrison said, according to IGN.
Morrison also criticized the Season 1 finale as morally and legally incoherent, pointing specifically to Sheriff Kerry’s killing of Hal Jordan and the absence of any consequences for that act, IGN reported. Morrison raised a separate concern about the show’s future without Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan, saying it is unclear how a second season could succeed if the dynamic that made the first season work is lost.
What It Means For Fans
For viewers hoping for a quick confirmation, the message from those close to the show is that nothing is locked in yet. A new creative team is working on what a second season could look like, but no network announcement has followed. Chandler’s performance as a reluctant, grizzled Hal Jordan set Lanterns apart from the more jubilant Silver Age version of the character, according to TVLine, and Morrison’s comments suggest that distinction may be central to whether a follow-up season can work without changes.
Lanterns was built as a grounded Midwestern mystery set on Earth rather than a cosmic space opera, drawing comparisons to HBO’s Watchmen, TVLine reported. That tone, paired with Chandler’s lead performance, is part of what Morrison implied would be difficult to replicate in a new chapter.
Background And Context
The uncertainty around a renewal comes despite strong viewership numbers. The Season 1 finale drew 10.5 million viewers globally and 7.2 million in the U.S. across three days, TheWrap reported, up from a premiere that brought in 9.3 million viewers globally and 6.6 million domestically. Across the season, Lanterns averaged 19.3 million viewers globally, ranking among the top five HBO series launches in the platform’s history, according to TheWrap.
Audience reception has been more mixed. Lanterns holds a 69% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest of any DC Universe project, TVLine reported, trailing Peacemaker Season 2 at 79% and Supergirl at 72%.

What’s Next
No premiere date, cast announcement or official renewal has been made for Lanterns Season 2. Development continues under Cantwell and Mundy, and any formal greenlight from HBO would mark the next confirmed step for the series.
