Geordie Greep Cancels Tour Dates After Vancouver Allegation

Geordie Greep tour cancellations followed a Vancouver sexual assault allegation, which the singer denied on stage before canceling five U.S. shows.

Geordie Greep Cancels Tour Dates After Vancouver Allegation

Geordie Greep, the former Black Midi frontman, canceled five U.S. tour dates after a person distributed fliers outside a Vancouver venue on Oct. 8 accusing him of sexual assault, according to Pitchfork and Consequence. Greep denied raping anyone but acknowledged making an unwanted advance at a house party, addressing the allegation directly from the stage before the cancellations were confirmed on Oct. 10.

What Greep Said Onstage

Greep took the stage in Vancouver on Oct. 8 without his backing band to speak to the crowd about what happened the previous night, according to Consequence.

“Essentially what happened last night, me and some of the band we went out to some bars, we went out, we met people, and it ended up in a situation really late at a house party,” Greep said, according to Consequence. “I got the wrong end of the stick with someone who was there, and I made a move, and it didn’t come off. I really quickly apologized, and it was a complete misunderstanding on my part, and I felt extremely bad, I feel extremely sorry, and extremely upset about the situation.

I would never rape a woman. I’m not a rapist. It’s not how that went down.”

Greep also addressed his decision to perform without his band that night. “It’s a very strange thing to have happened and a very scary thing, so all of the band, I understand that I didn’t want to force them to still play a show in the light of that happening,” he said, according to Consequence. “We were unsure what the response would be to all this, and I can only tell you that it’s OK if people want refunds, if they want to leave, it’s fine.

I just wanted to be transparent with you about what happened. I’m very, very, very sorry; I made someone uncomfortable without meaning to. It’s not a good thing, it’s not good.”

After speaking to the audience, Greep performed a solo set at the venue, Consequence reported. Proceeds from the Vancouver concert were set to benefit an organization that supports victims of sexual violence, according to Pitchfork.

What The Tour Cancellations Mean

The Geordie Greep tour cancellations were confirmed on Oct. 10, two days after the allegation surfaced, according to Pitchfork. Greep pulled out of scheduled shows in Boise, Salt Lake City, Boulder, Denver and Omaha, Pitchfork and Consequence both reported.

A show in Des Moines remained on the schedule as of Oct. 10, according to Pitchfork. Greep’s November tour dates in Europe also remained scheduled as of that date, Pitchfork reported.

Neither source reported the specific content of the flier that accused Greep of sexual assault, and the allegation itself has not been confirmed through a police report, court filing or formal complaint cited in the available reporting.

Background

Greep fronted Black Midi before pursuing work as a solo artist. The Vancouver stop was part of a tour that included additional U.S. dates and a run of European shows planned for November.

What’s Next

The Des Moines show and the European tour dates remain scheduled as of the most recent reporting. No further statement from Greep or additional details about the allegation have been reported beyond his remarks onstage in Vancouver.
