Transformers

Transformers movies, Paramount's franchise based on the Hasbro toy and media brand.

Total Apex Take

The best Transformers media right now isn't live-action — Transformers One proved animation is where this franchise belongs.

Transformers One's critical reception was the best the franchise has had in years, precisely because it went back to basics: an animated origin story for Optimus Prime and Megatron's friendship-turned-rivalry, without the human-soldier subplots and visual incoherence that defined the Bay-era live-action films. It underperformed at the box office relative to its quality, which says more about how exhausted audiences are with the brand's live-action baggage than about the film itself.

Our take is that Hasbro and Paramount have a clear choice in front of them: keep chasing live-action spectacle that audiences have shown diminishing interest in, or lean into the animated, character-first approach that actually worked. Toy sales remain the real core business regardless of which path the films take.

If a live-action Transformers film gets announced next, the test is whether it learns Transformers One's lesson about character before scale — not whether it has bigger robots.

About Transformers

Transformers is a media franchise based on Hasbro's toy line of shape-shifting robots, adapted into a long-running live-action film series by Paramount Pictures beginning in 2007 under director Michael Bay. The franchise follows the ongoing conflict between the heroic Autobots and villainous Decepticons, often set against a backdrop of human characters drawn into their battles.

Beyond the mainline live-action series, Transformers has a decades-long history in animation dating back to the 1980s, and the franchise has continued evolving through prequel films, animated reboots, and crossover projects.

The franchise originates from Hasbro's Transformers toy line, which launched in 1984 alongside a tie-in animated series and comic books produced with Takara (the Japanese toy company behind the original Diaclone and Microman figures Hasbro adapted). Paramount's live-action film series began in 2007 under director Michael Bay, who directed the first five entries before the franchise shifted toward prequel and spin-off films such as Bumblebee (2018) and Transformers One (2024).
